In some ways, this hotel lived up to the expectations: premium L’Occitane products, interesting decor, excellent breakfast, helpful staff. In one critical way it did not. The website describes and elegant Georgian townhome with tall windows and ceilings. When we entered the foyer of the building, we were excited to see our room. We had been in Scotland for over a week and experienced a range of accommodations: attic room in Balmaha, “vintage” room in Ballater, modern apartments in Glasgow and Stirling. We were looking forward to renovated elegance. But instead of heading up the stairs to an airy Georgian townhome room, we were led into the basement. Beware: you can pay a premium price at Nira Caledonia and receive a bunkerlike room with low ceilings, stained carpeting, and a window that looks out into a stairwell. I didn’t expect AC or a lift. I can even understand no hot water in the sink (on the second day) and a sofa bed with subpar mattress. But a basement room? I might as well have been at the Moxy out by the airport.

Hot tub in room didn't work at first. No elevator. Mediocre shower.

I chose this hotel because it looked so nice on the internet and because of its location, near charming Stockbridge and yet in a beautiful area. Our junior suite was very spacious with nice views of the street. The staff were friendly and helpful and we had good experiences with Jesus and especially Mac. However, just before we arrived, and after fully paid for our 5-night stay in advance, I received multiple emails and WhatsApp messages from the hotel to harass me about pre-check-in and asking me for my CC details. Having had a bad experience before and reluctant to share my CC details, I phoned the hotel to ask them to let me check in on arrival. Yet, the annoying messages still kept coming. We didn’t know until much later that, due to strict conservation rules, the hotel has no lifts and no air conditioning. We were lucky to be given a room on the 1st floor. Because of the warm weather, we had to sleep with our windows open. For the first two nights, we were woken in the very early morning by extremely loud voices coming from the reception area, right below our room. We had to email management to ask for help. In addition, on two consecutive nights, the noise from the jacuzzi in the room next door was sufficiently loud to keep us from going to sleep. The fittings and fittings in the bathroom need to be checked and replaced. For example the toilet flush needs to be fixed as it doesn’t work well. Breakfast was ok, but the service was slow.

Great place. Exceeded expectations. Room was indeed luxury for an old building. Only thing was lack of AC, but portable fans were already provided in the room. Highly recommended.
