Redefining Japanese Culture / New Calligraphy

This August, AKI Gallery is honored to once again host another solo exhibition by the Japanese contemporary artist Kengo NAKAMURA, featuring new works from a few of his classic series and the debut of a whole new series, showcasing the artist’s artistic journey.

The exhibition is titled Kengo NAKAMURA’s Contemporary Japanese-Style Painting. The term "Japanese-Style Painting" refers to "Nihonga," a traditional Japanese painting style that uses mineral pigments, ink, and other traditional materials. Kengo NAKAMURA, rooted in traditional painting techniques, integrates POP cultural symbols and Western artistic concepts, creatively redefining the relationship between Japanese cultural history and modern painting. His vivid modern totems and symbols reflect the diverse ideologies of contemporary urban life.

In addition to new works from the previously exhibited series such as “Without Me”, “Japanese Frogs”, and “Shinbun Itchi”, this exhibition will be revealing for the first time a new series titled “Hiragana Painting”, which integrates the art of Japanese hiragana characters into painting. After the Meiji era, Japanese painting began to adopt Western artistic forms, with the belief that the absence of text on the canvas symbolized progress. To emulate Western painting (Yōga), people of the time removed the most important element of Edo-period painting—text—from their creations.

In the Shinbun Itchi and Hiragana Painting series, Kengo NAKAMURA incorporates emoticons from the internet era and Japanese hiragana characters back into the composition of Japanese painting, attempting to recreate the traditional East Asian integration of calligraphy and painting. The artist's expression transcends linguistic barriers, inspiring a new worldview that is independent from language itself. From August 10 to August 31, 2024, visit AKI Gallery to witness this dialogue that blurs the cultural boundaries and experience the infinite possibilities of art.
