Whisper｜Katsura FUNAKOSHI Solo Exhibition Information
This May, AKI Gallery will present the solo exhibition "Whisper" by the Japanese master Katsura FUNAKOSHI. This exhibition features a rare collection of sculptures, paintings, and original prints spanning over two decades. We invite you to join us on the journey of Katsura FUNAKOSHI (1951-2024) and revisit his remarkable artistic career over 72 years.
「The People I See / The Sphinx in Myself」
Katsura FUNAKOSHI, who was a key figure in Japanese contemporary art, passed away on March 29, 2024, leaving infinite reminisce to the art industry. FUNAKOSHI was born 1951 in Morioka City, Iwate, and received his graduate degree from the Tokyo University of the Arts. Throughout his career, he ceaselessly pondered the very meaning of "human existence", with the earlier works depicting majestic figures manifesting the spiritual world of humankinds, and the later Hermaphroditic “Sphinx series” embodying the beauty of flesh and bone. Beneath FUNAKOSHI’s chisels, camphor wood vividly delineates the skin texture and muscles of human body, and those mesmerizing deep marble eyes gazes into the other side of the unknown universe.
Katsura FUNAKOSHI's solo exhibition, "Whisper," will present a pair of sculptures gazing into each other's eyes with a steely intensity, alongside his phenomenal paintings and prints. The sketches seemingly echo with the deep soul within the sculptures, imbuing them with extraordinary and unique charm. The original prints, on the other hand, created using various techniques, possess a mysterious texture beyond imagination.
FUNAKOSHI’s oeuvres are collected by over 40 internationally renowned art museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (MoMA), Centre Pompidou, Paris, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, etc. His works have been displayed in numerous international exhibitions, with invitations to participate in major biennials such as the Venice Biennale, São Paulo Biennial, Documenta in Kassel, Germany, and exhibitions in Sydney, among others around the world. He was also awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2011. Alongside such successful career and splendid achievements, Katsura FUNAKOSHI never stops exploring the human spiritual journey with the steadfast determination of a marathon runner.
