Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord—Tempest Project Introduction

A radical reimagining of a Shakespearean classic in the swansong from theatre legend Peter Brook

As one of the final productions of the 80-year career of legendary British theatre director Peter Brook (1925-2022), Tempest Project was directed by Brook with long-time collaborator Marie-Hélène Estienne, and was adapted by the duo from The Tempest, Shakespeare’s last solo play.

A fantastical fable set on a remote island, The Tempest is one of the Bard’s most imaginative and enigmatic works, and explores the complexities of humanity in a surreal world of spirits and magic. Tempest Project began as a workshop in early 2020, where Brook and Estienne conducted intensive research into the source material with a small group of actors, as they set out to explore the play’s rich subtext and underlying layers. The result is a radically refreshing interpretation of a timeless classic, told through the theme of freedom and its undefinable nature.

With a lifetime of experience directing Shakespeare, Brook is often credited for revolutionising the way Shakespearean plays are presented in modern theatre. He had staged The Tempest three times in the past and called this fourth foray his “most refined” iteration of the popular tragicomedy. Widely revered for his unparalleled ability to transform elusive ideas and abstract motifs into vivid theatrical expressions, Brook saw the metaphorical play as a treasure trove of profound insights, and delved beyond the surface plot and into the inner core of the story, bringing its hidden meanings to life.

Having previously staged three of Brook’s productions in sold-out performances—Fragments (2008), A Magic Flute (2012) and Battlefield (2016)—the Hong Kong Arts Festival is now proud to present Tempest Project, a celebration of Brook’s artistic genius and tireless pursuit of innovation, and a great opportunity to experience The Tempest in a new light.
