Flower / Robert KUSHNER | Robert KUSHNER Solo Exhibition Information

In spring 2024, AKI Gallery is thrilled to announce the debut solo exhibition of American Pattern and Decoration movement pioneer and artist, Robert KUSHNER (b. 1949), in Taiwan — "Flower / Robert KUSHNER." Delicate floral motifs will grace the entirety of AKI Gallery, promising a delightful surprise for all visitors.
The Pattern and Decoration movement, commonly known as the "P&D movement," emerged in the United States during the mid-1970s to early 1980s as a response to minimalist and conceptual art movements. Also referred to as "New Decorativeness," it blurs the distinction between background and foreground, with no emphasis on specific aspects of composition. Collage takes various forms, integrating sensory, rich, and contradictory materials and patterns in vibrant combinations, reminiscent of abstract works of the time, covering the canvas edge-to-edge. This raw postmodern appropriation of inspiration from diverse cultural sources established P&D as the first truly postmodern art movement.

Robert KUSHNER once stated, “I never get tired of pursuing new ideas in the realm of ornamentation. Decoration, an abjectly pejorative dismissal for many, is a very big, somewhat defiant declaration for me. … The eye can wander, the mind think unencumbered through visual realms that are expansively and emotionally rich. Decoration has always had its own agenda, the sincere and unabashed offering of pleasure and solace."
Robert KUSHNER ingeniously intertwines lines, colors, and surfaces using the collage concept, liberating the gaze from being constrained by a single focal point. Departing from the conventional Western still-life painting, he skillfully employs his heightened sensitivity to color and mixed media to freely interpret his vision of flowers. The maze-like space is depicted through multiple mediums, introducing vibrant botanical patterns emerging from the artwork, creating a subtle bas-relief effect that eloquently narrates the stories encapsulated within flower buds. It is expansive, nonlinear, unrestrained, yet precise.
