Arab Arts Focus—Untitled 14KM | Show Introduction

Thought-provoking and gently humorous— a dazzling combination of installation and performance
Untitled 14KM is a visually stunning, brilliantly original combination of installation, theatre and dance by Morocco’s foremost visual artist and performer, Youness Atbane.
Four fictional characters—a 12th-century Arab-Andalusian poet, a museum director, a curator and an artist—are trying to set up an exhibition that analyses the concept of modernism by interpreting the poetic writing of the Arab-Andalusian era, as well as artworks by contemporary Arabian artists. As these representatives of different aspects of the art world grapple with their task, their interactions progress through negotiation and seduction, conflict and competition.
Atbane raises thought-provoking questions about the relationship between contemporary art and identity—specifically the Arab identity—from the perspective of Morocco, a North African country with its own rich cultural heritage. Dazzlingly imaginative, this is a lively, accessible work which treats its serious subject matter with gentle humour and can be enjoyed on many levels.
With a focus on the fields of art, its actors and its geopolitics, Atbane’s installations and performances have been staged to critical acclaim in countries including France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Morocco, Egypt and India.
