The Journey of Creating a Photographic Monograph - "I See" by Chan Dick Introduction

In countless corners of our city, one can discover an array of unexpected and thought-provoking graffiti artworks. While some passersby may dismiss them as mere background noise, for others, these creations serve as a means of expressing and releasing the pressures of daily life. Yet, even the most captivating graffiti cannot evade the fate of being erased, gradually concealed under layers of paint. Photographer Chan Dick roams through various districts of Hong Kong, diligently seeking out and capturing these almost imperceptible traces of graffiti. Behind each covered artwork lies a buried story, and every brushstroke bears the indelible imprint of the city.
"I See" is the first self-funded and self-published photobook by photographer Chan Dick. It has been in the making for several years. The photographed walls are filled with layers of paint, some appearing exceptionally white, some in dark black, with most residing in shades of gray in between. Chan deliberately arranges the works in a sequence that transitions from light to dark, reflecting the shifting face of the city. Although the collection predominantly features black, white, and shades of gray, attentive observers will occasionally spot traces of red, yellow, green, and other colors in the paint. Therefore, the photographer opted for offset colour printing, with a minimal 5% difference in tonal depth between each photograph, demanding high-quality printing techniques. In addition to the sequencing and color choices, meticulous considerations were given to paper selection, binding methods, packaging design, and other aspects of production.
Creating a photographic monograph is no simple task; it requires a blend of professional skills and emotional investment. The production cost of photography books often differs significantly from conventional publications, often leaving many puzzled. As a studio dedicated to local photography and publishing, Galerie artellex not only provides exceptional digital printing services but also partakes in the production of high-quality photography books. This time, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Chan for generously lending us the production materials of his photobook "I See", including drafts, printing plates, and proofs. This collaboration allows us, the industry, photographers, and clients, to jointly explore and gain a profound understanding of the process involved in creating a high-quality photography book. We hope that this collaboration will enable everyone to better appreciate the value of photographic art and contribute to the field of photography publishing.
