SHADOW | Back to Back Theatre & Back to Back Pictures Introduction

nl_web_SHADOW

An entertaining and profound search for answers

that transforms our understanding of the theatre and humanity

Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have both previously warned of the dangers posed by AI to human existence. Here, Simon, Scott and Sarah, activists with disabilities, hold a town hall forum to unite the community, map out strategies, and save the world from such a fate. However, their quest comes under threat when pride, prejudice, and people-labelling cause the trio themselves to split.

Premiered in 2022, and adapted from the critically acclaimed play, The Shadow Whose Prey The Hunter Becomes (2019), this black comedy is the brilliant result of deliberations by Back to Back Theatre’s artistic director Bruce Gladwin and six of the group’s core performers over two and a half years during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Provocative and absorbing, the theatre company’s first feature-length production synergises documentary and dramatic-style elements to immerse and challenge viewers as the action unfolds. An ensemble cast comprising mainly actors with disabilities lead the way on screen while interns who identify as people with disabilities form the majority of those behind the scenes, supported by professional mentors. Accolades already include the Audience Award in the Visions section of the 2022 SXSW Film Festival in the USA and finalist for the Blackmagic Design Australian Innovation Award at the 2022 Melbourne Film Festival. A riveting meeting of minds not to be missed.

Geelong-based Back to Back Theatre draws creative power from its ensemble of neurodiverse actors and has emerged as one of the leading voices in the Australian cultural scene. In 2022, the company received the International Ibsen Award, informally dubbed the “Nobel Prize for Theatre”, for the penetrating impact of its body of work on audiences.
