The Sheng goes global: Kevin Cheng and friends.

Hong Kong-born Kevin Cheng is a virtuoso musician and a sonic explorer. He is one of a new generation of sheng players who believes that this ancient instrument should know no limits. As a member of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, he is a dedicated explorer of new territory for his instrument—convinced that the sheng can be equally expressive in classical, jazz or folk music. In this concert, he showcases his instrument’s potential in music ranging from Astor Piazzolla to Chow Jun Yi, from Claude Bolling to Phang Kok Jun, from Law Wai Lun and Tan Kah Yong to Pong Law.

This is a concert as vibrant, as cosmopolitan and as dynamic as Hong Kong itself, and Cheng will be joined by a selected group of musicians in the western tradition who share his energy, creativity and communicative flair. The programme includes three HKAF commissions celebrating different Asian cities and bringing together the sounds of Malay, Cantonese, Carnatic and jazz traditions. With roots in both Hong Kong and Singapore, this is entirely natural to Cheng. “I really hope to showcase the versatility of sheng music,” he says of the concert that acknowledges no boundaries except Cheng’s own remarkable musical imagination.
