An Opera Double bill of Menotti’s Telephone and The Medium | Show Introduction

TUTTI’s production of The Telephone and The Medium will take place in the Theatre of Hong Kong City Hall on 3-4 November.

Gian Carlo Menotti was born on July 7, 1911, in Italy. He emigrated to the United States at the age of 16, and enrolled at Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, majoring in composition and piano. He was one of the most important 20th century opera composers in the American. As The Medium was insufficiently long (75 minutes) to sustain an evening by itself, Menotti paired it with the one act comic opera Telephone as a curtain raiser. The Double bill was well-received with a run of 212 performances on Broadway in 1947.

The Double bill will be leading the Alumni Association of Music Department of The Chinese University of Hong Kong conducted by Vivian Ip. Budding singers will take on different roles in the opera under the direction by Cindy Leung.
