Every moment turns momental under the torrent of images and time. They keep flipping through every moment we see, not allowing either pick, collect nor remember. Yet, sometimes people remain hovering among some specific scenes in mind. But why? Are those scenes so memorable or so reluctant to forget? How could painting freeze recollect the momental passion in the flow of time?

“Flow and Hover” is a solo exhibition by Hector Chan, with paintings taking different scenes from movies and daily life as subjects. Chan’s practice mainly focus on exploring how painting could represent dynamics.

Dynamic gesture smoothens and extends desire of seeing, it strikes into the eyes and summons the torrent of images in mind instantly. Sometimes it penetrates the time, summoning next moment of the movement; and sometimes it penetrates the memory, connecting similar scenes together.

Painting and Drawing usually born with each other, drawing marks the immediate intention; and painting collects the thoughts. While time and paint stacking and overlapping, the gain of paintingness and heterogeneity make painting be mature, but at the same time, the immediate energy of drawing declines. Representation of dynamic does not merely aim at figuring the momentary gestures, but also at catching up the freshness of desire and energy of depiction.

“The Scenes” modifies the way of painting by using pleather as painting surface, it makes oil painting process become continuous action as a one-day performance, improving fluency of painting process. By taking the middle road among immediacy and complex, this series is exploring how painting could response to the desire of seeing nowadays.

“Flow and Hover” represents the scenes flashing and hovering in Chan’s mind.

Seeing flows like water, yet painting chases the moments; Time flows like water, yet people cling the memories.

Painting is personal, but perhaps many of us share that same mood of flow and hover.
