A provocative opera mirroring our times

A prized Czech institution and one of the leading opera houses in Central Europe, National Theatre Brno, which delighted Festival audiences with The Makropulos Case and recorded versions of The Cunning Little Vixen and Jenůfa, gives us The Greek Passion, a provocative follow-up to earlier resounding successes.

In a remote Greek village, the shepherd Manolios and his fellow villagers prepare to take up the roles of Christ, Mary Magdalene and the apostles in the traditional Easter Passion Play. But the sudden arrival of a group of starving refugees throws the community into an unexpected moral crisis. As the story unfolds, the village cast grow into the Biblical characters they portray, leading to an inexorable tragedy.

Based on the novel Christ Recrucified by the modern Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis, Martinů’s poignant epic four-act opera remains immediately relevant to issues facing the world today.

This online performance was recorded live in Brno in November 2021. With renowned Czech opera director Jiří Heřman at the helm, National Theatre Brno brings together a cast of nearly 150 soloists and actors to present this masterpiece.
