Stayed with partner

Just before our stay we got a message from Dubois Chicago saying that they would not send the code to enter the property unless we sent them a security deposit almost twice as large as the room charge. They also said it couldn't be put on our credit card but had to be sent via Zelle or Venmo directly from a bank account. I messaged them and said I was not comfortable doing that and that I would only pay through my credit card. They again said they could only accept Zelle or Venmo. That's a good way to lose your money, so I contacted Hotels.com, through whom we booked the stay, and asked for the stay to be canceled. They agreed, but it took 45 minutes on the phone--while I was on vacation. They also declined to compensate me in any way despite the fact my family and I now had nowhere to stay in Chicago on a Friday night. Family members found reports of this happening before. So why does Hotels.com continue to do business with Dubois Chicago?

Solo stay

I stayed here for a work trip and I think it was pretty great. The common areas were clean, the host responded in some occasions. They communicated well with check in and check out. I do have some concerns, I brought up some safety concerns I had concerning one of the other guests and my safety. This guest was up at random hours of the night and I reached out to the host with no response from them. I had to reach out to the housekeeping who reassured me that all cameras do work in case something is wrong. She checked in on me everyday after that, I wish the host prioritized me. I hope to see my security deposit within the week as promised. I also had some concerns because of the past reviews but I am going to give it a week and hope to see that security deposit returned to me. Other than that, they have a lot of cooking utensils, the kitchen is set up nicely. Extensive amount of parking. The community is great not too loud. Everything was cleaned daily by housekeeping.

Stayed with friends

Asked for a Zelle “refundable” deposit and denied refund citing violation of house rules however there are documented images from their security footage that we did not violate those rules they claimed we did. They told me I checked in with three other guests and sent security footages, those were my friends helping me move the luggage not guests checking in. The total number of guests never violated any rules. They don’t have heater/AC in the room, asked us to open the window or use the room heater if we feel hot or cold. The room heater doesn’t work. The bathroom didn’t have hot water.

Parking was easy, right outside the door. The room was nice. The pillow was unnecessarily HARD. I was asked for a $300 deposit via Venmo with the promise of it being returned and it was not returned. Tried to ask when I'd see it back and I have not received any replies after two weeks. DO NOT TRUST THIS PLACE AS LEGIT.

For business

The property asked for a $300 cash (Venmo) refundable deposit. They said after 5-7 days they would refund it. After two weeks still nothing and no response to my inquiries. In addition, there was a party with 25+ people in the common area on a Saturday night. Very loud music and lots of yelling. I DO NOT recommend this place.

DO NOT STAY! Go to a hotel instead. First off they require a security deposit, which yes is stated in the review, but they fail to mention you need to use a cash transfer app to do this. The listing states that they do take credit/debit cards (Not for the security deposit I guess). I had to start a Venmo account to make this happen. Transferred $300 for the deposit through Venmo. More on this after review of the property. The room was ok, the slats on the bed supporting the mattress were half falling off so we had to fix that ourselves. The shared bathroom was ok but no stopper for the bath tub. Property was ok. Back to my deposit issue. As stated in the agreement, security deposit would be returned 5 to 7 business days after checkout. After 9 DAYS I reached out to the property to inquire about my deposit. They asked for my Venmo account so they could refund my deposit. They responded with "it will be refunded soon, latest tomorrow morning. Tomorrow comes, no refund. Shocker! Multiple text messages were sent about my refund and wouldn't you know it, not a single response. Now I have to contact Hotels.com. Multiple times! They kept telling me I need to contact the property. The property has officially ghosted me at this point. Thankfully Hotels.com got though to them and I got my deposit back 13 days after checkout. If you stay here be ready to work for your deposit back. Not sure about all these 10 out of 10 reviews? Did they get their deposit back automatically? I did not.

This property was pretty nice. Great location - I could walk to my relative's home. The only downside was the pillows were really flat.

Stayed with family

This property should not even be listed on Expedia. The staff here is horrible. And so is the ownership. Once you book your nonrefundable stay, they will email you to send them them $500 with Zelle, using “friends and family” as the category. This is not listed anywhere in the process of booking, and it is also against the terms and conditions for Zelle. Find somewhere else to stay.
