Fantastic 5.0
It was a choppy ride with gale warning and high chance of sea sickness. Thankful that the ride proceeded and we got to see marama and tiaki whales and a school of dusky dolphins and fur seals

Fantastic 5.0
Our driver and guide, Joseph, was very professional and responsible, and even took us to explore some extra views. We were so lucky to have clear weather today and saw sperm whales, dolphins, and seals!

Great 4.0
The whale watching activity was canceled due to bad weather, but the tour guide seemed inexperienced and unable to arrange and execute a backup plan in a timely manner. When we stopped along the way, they also didn't announce the meeting time. Luckily, the group members were quite good and didn't cause any delays. The guide did provide some brief commentary along the way, and there was someone in our group who didn't understand Chinese, but the guide hardly used English to accommodate them.

Fantastic 5.0
Our tour guide was incredibly enthusiastic, taking us to Tongue Point, a spot very close to the sea lions. The itinerary was well-planned, and even though the road conditions weren't the smoothest, we felt completely at ease with our guide. You definitely shouldn't miss this!

What to know before visiting Kaikoura

What to expect from Kaikoura’s activities

Kaikoura’s Things to Do are dominated by Outdoor & sports activities and Tours, with outdoor adventures accounting for the largest share of bookings and tours supplying the widest range of options. Demand rises and falls through the year — bookings dip in June and peak in November — so the island’s wildlife and ocean experiences feel busiest in the late spring window.

Best activities by traveller type

Families will find Tours especially easy to enjoy together: they offer the broadest spread of options and tend to include accessible, guided experiences well suited to mixed ages. Couples often prefer Outdoor & sports activities for memorable, nature-focused outings that play to Kaikoura’s coastal character. Solo travellers and small groups can pick from both categories depending on whether they want guided touring or more active, outdoorsy pursuits.

What travellers from the United States should book ahead

Most visitors here plan roughly a month out, so you can often keep plans flexible and book many activities a day or two before arrival, but the earliest planners usually secure bookings around two months ahead. Booking earlier matters most in the peak month of November, when demand is significantly higher than the yearly average.

Comparing categories: price and who they suit

Tours are the easiest way in and show the widest price spread, meaning you’ll find budget-friendly guided options alongside pricier, premium experiences — they suit travellers wanting structure and variety. Outdoor & sports activities sit a touch higher on typical price and cater to those seeking active, nature-driven days out. Together they cover both entry-level choices and more premium, experience-led outings.
