Why Xiguan?
Xiguan (西关) is located in the western part of Guangzhou’s old city, and is one of the oldest and best-preserved neighborhoods in the city. Since the Qing Dynasty, it served as the commercial and residential heart of Guangzhou — home to wealthy Lingnan merchants, and the birthplace of a distinctive local culture defined by arcaded shophouses, stained glass Manchurian windows, wooden screen doors, and a food tradition that has endured to this day.
The neighborhood still carries the urban fabric formed over one to two hundred years ago — arcade streets, community markets, and a way of life that continues naturally around you. Unlike commercialized tourist areas, this is still where local people live: buying groceries, having meals, chatting with neighbors. Many shops have been running for decades, doing just a few things, yet drawing steady queues every single day.
What you’ll see here is not a food experience staged for visitors — it’s the real daily life and eating culture of Guangzhou people.
We’ll spend half a day walking through Xiguan’s lanes and markets with you — eating, exploring, and talking along the way. Your dedicated local guide won’t just show you the way; they’ll share the stories behind every dish and every street, helping you understand how Guangzhou people live and the history woven into this neighborhood. The route also includes at least two Michelin-listed restaurants, offering an interesting contrast between timeless neighborhood flavors and contemporary recognition. From a bowl of rice noodle rolls to a cup of herbal tea, from the arcade streetscape to the shores of Liwan Lake — you’ll experience this city by truly stepping into it, not just passing through.
