Painting a traditional Daruma doll in Osaka turned out to be one of the most meaningful experiences of our trip. It’s such a simple idea, painting a face onto your own Daruma but it carries so much intention behind it. You set a goal, paint one eye, and then complete the other when that goal comes true. It made the whole activity feel personal, not just creative. Even without perfect language, the staff guided us so kindly through the process. There was something really calming about sitting down, focusing, and putting your own little personality into the design. No pressure for it to be perfect just yours. It ended up being more than just a souvenir. It felt like we were taking home a small piece of Japanese culture, along with a quiet reminder of our goals. Such a wholesome, grounding experience—and something we’ll actually keep and look back on.
what a fun experience! you see these Daruma dolls everywhere in Japan and get the creative freedom to make your own with this class. most of the instruction is watching a movie and reading yourself from a book, but it’s simple and you have many options for how you would create your doll and what characters and hopes and dreams that you want to imbue into it- I recommend buying the display box, to help protect your art, as it is very lightweight made from paper mache and the box helps you still be able to squish your luggage when your trying to leave Japan with all your souvenirs lol
great fun for our family of all ages from 4.5 to 60s! the painting was maybe a little challenging at first for our 4.5 year old but she ended up having the most creative daruma! our almost 7 year old loved it as well. beautiful space and a great creative outlet. a nice a change of pace! we visited Katsuoji temple the next day.
That was a truly unique experience. I was really able to find myself, and the result was wonderful. I learned so much about the meaning and creation of Daruma. Highly recommended!
This was just a relaxing, spiritual and fun experience. I highly recommend it. you are creating you own personal Daruma while learning about the cultural and story behind it. They also have these really cool wooden boxes to hold your Daruma in. I didn't buy it because of suitcase space issues, but it's definitely worth the cost
Staff was very attentive to explain & interact with me to better understand the history of Daruma, the making of Daruma & how to prepare to decorate my Daruma. Very relaxing, fun activity for either solo travellers or couples / families!
Amazing! Lived learning the history of Daruma. Was so fun to try writing in Hirgana/Kanji the leaders were so helpful with painting the daruma. You pick your color and then they set you lose with painting. you can use paint or paint markers. I used paint markers to help me place where I wanted the lines. Be careful if you make a mark somewhere on the body because you will want to cover it up and they don’t have the paint of the Daruma dolls.
A must for someone looking to have a more hands on Japan adventure. A great way to make a piece unique souvenir. The staff is very helpful and you learn a lot about the history of the daruma dolls and the structure and symbolism behind their designs. You have a selection of various base colors which represent different things. You also have the option for a fully blank daruma or one where certain accents are already drawn on for those less confident about their art skills. They provide a guide with various wishes as they are written in Japanese as well as how to write different syllables in Japanese (for writing your name). You have ample time to practice writing in Japanese before you actually begin painting on your daruma. There is also an option for a decorative wooden storage box where you can get the lid laser etched from an assortment of designs. Overall a great experience and highly suggest it for anyone looking to do a little more than just sightseeing.
The Daruma class was a great experience. It began with a short 10-minute video that explained the history and demonstrated each step of creating a beautiful Daruma. All materials were provided and the pace was comfortable for beginners. We left with a nicely finished Daruma and a much better appreciation for the tradition. Would definitely recommend for anyone interested in Japanese crafts and culture.

The instructor was SO lovely and it was so accommodating, beautiful and just an awesome experience defiantly recommend and would come again! you also get to to take it home so makes it so special! And also very easy to find!
