What to expect
Embark on a day trip from London to the picturesque Cotswolds and discover key Downton Abbey filming locations. Visit Cogges Manor Farm, where Marigold was raised, exploring its kitchens, living areas, and farmyard. Continue to the village of Shilton, known for its shallow ford and scenes from Lady Sybil and Tom Branson’s story. In Bampton, see St. Mary’s Church and other iconic sites from the series. Then head to Highclere Castle to explore its rooms, enjoy the restaurants, wander the grounds, and view the Egyptology exhibition. Spend about three hours immersed in Downton Abbey history before returning to London.

I wasn’t able to finish all the seasons of Downton Abbey but it felt really special to visit Highclere Castle, especially when our guide, Katherine, played the opening theme as our car drove into view of the castle. It felt so surreal that I was able to be on the filming location as the characters I saw in the drama. It was lovely to see the farm animals at Cogges Manor Farm. It was the first time I’ve ever seen a live turkey. The guide also explained to us how thatched roofs are made. There were quite a number cottages and houses with thatched roofs which were interesting to see.
Guide was entertaining and knowledgeable as she shared tidbits of information throughout most of the drive.
