Stayed with family

One of our rooms was very hot and loud because it’s near the extraction fan from the restaurant. Another room where my parents stayed, the heating was on (during a May heat wave) and the tap/showering water was boiling hot with no cold running at all. The staff came to check, said there are no spare rooms to switch to because of the bank holiday weekend. They called the manager, promised to give me an answer, but then I saw ran to her car and never showed again. I asked another staff member. They called the manager and said they will give me partial refund and discount for breakfast, but I will need to wait until 9am tomorrow for the manager to come. We waited until 11am and the manager never showed up. I left my number to ask them to call me. No returned call. I have asked agent to follow up with them. Again, 1st they said they will refund, but need to wait the manager to sign off. I just received message that this hotel refused to refund. They charged double their usual rate and they provided little to no service, no management and poor living conditions.

Good

Solo stay

I stay here frequently due to the ideal location for my place of work, since the hotel changed hands several years ago it hasnt been the same, its very poorly staffed, often only one or two staff in at any one time, having to deal with check-in, the bar and any resturant needs. I have stayed in numerous rooms and all seem to have no or little regular maintenance especiall the showers where a good de-scale of the heads, and repairs to the controls are neccessary. Most of the staff are very helpful however I feel the overall management of this hotel is the primary cause of the issue mentioned.

Enjoyed our stay, although should have had things pointed out to us on check in. Didn’t have our room serviced as missed the sign. Lady on check in could have been little more welcoming. Ground floor room, curtains didn’t pull together well, and kettle leaked.

A good location for our short overnight trip. We arrived after 10pm which was fine. Staff on the desk were practical but not super welcoming. It was a hot day and we had our dog with us. When we got to our room it was absolutely stifling and there was no way we could stay in the room with him. So we requested a room change (Note there is no air con in the hotel! The receptionist seemed a bit overwhelmed but did a good job of finding a much cooler ground floor room which was absolutely fine apart from the fact that the shower and sink only ran hot water and very hot water! Tbf we knew that but just wanted a much cooler room. Room was nicely set out and comfortable. As hotel it looks nice and rooms are nice but the lack of air con and staff on the desk not quite on the case are the main reasons for the lower score. We would visit again as it was a good price. We didn’t have breakfast.

The stay was very good. My only slight criticism was that the digital check-in details, in which I gave details about my arrival and a request for a first floor room didn’t appear to have made it to the reception staff. The actual check-in receptionist was very good.

The property was well located for an overnight stop on our way from Heathrow to family in Devon. Check in was smooth and staff welcoming. Room was ok. Bathroom floor prob needed a clean round edges as fluff and couple of dead flies were behind bathroom door. Shower was very hot. Hard to control temperature and at times was near scalding. The curtains in the bedroom had seen better days. Not hung properly so overall look tired. Bed sheets were clean and bed was comfy. Coffee and tea making avail but we didnt use. Lack of plugs made it difficult to dry hair as only mirror was on opposite wall near door. Breakfast: As it was a Bank Holiday Monday on the hotel info said served till 10.30am instead of the usual 9.30am. We arrived at 9.15am and told all the hot buffet items were finished but we could help ourselves to fruit and pastries, yoghurt. We were offered a cooked breakfast to order by staff. It would have been nice to know that May Day BH was not included in your regular later serving hours. Overall I had a good sleep after a long international flight. For the price paid it was fine. So minor adjustments in the decor and cleaning could be improved.

Unfortunately the kitchen had no gas and this meant there was a very limited menu for both dinner and breakfast The veggie alternatives were not for us, so we had to travel to a local place for food. Breakfast was a bit of a disaster as that gas problem meant everything was microwaved or stewed. Everything tasted strange and very sweet. Not a pleasant experience Sorry Stones. We won’t be back.

For business

Unsatisfactory. No kettle in the room—I had to ask twice. Restaurant service was slow and inattentive. The steak pie had very little gravy, and the same staff member was on her phone at the service counter, so I couldn’t request more. No offer of dessert. The bedroom door emits a mini alarm when opened, which is irritating late at night. The walls are thin, with corridor doors slamming and disrupting sleep. At breakfast, up to five staff were gathered near reception, coming and going for drinks, but none assisting in the dining area; only the chef entered the buffet area, still wearing an outdoor puffer coat. On checkout, I was asked for an additional balance despite having already paid in full; when I produced my receipt, the manager (polite and not suspect of wrongdoing) immediately resolved it, suggesting a system error.

Fantastic

Solo stay

Great hotel, plentiful parking. I leave my windows open at night when I'm asleep but had to shut it at about 5am when cars started zooming down the A road outside - once shut, I could hear nothing. Comfortable bed, clean. Large room. No lifts so if you're struggling with mobility, one to think about.
