My tour was scheduled on Mar/08 but due to unforeseen reasons I called up the tour operator to have it rescheduled and they didn’t hesitate a bit to do it free of charge . Today’s Mekong Delta and Cu Chi Tunnels tour with Nicole was an absolute highlight of my Vietnam trip. Her boundless energy kept the group excited from the boat rides through lush delta canals to crawling through the historic Cu Chi tunnels. Cu Chi Tunnels Adventure At the tunnels, her lively storytelling brought Vietnam War history to life, explaining the 250km network while encouraging safe exploration and even range shooting. Nicole ensured everyone felt comfortable, patiently answering questions with a big smile. Mekong delta Nicole’s enthusiasm shone as she led us on sampan boats past Dragon, Unicorn, Phoenix, and Tortoise Islands, sharing fun facts about local life and stopping at a coconut candy workshop for tastings. Do buy Candies from this local community and support them .

Our tour guide, DragonKing, was outstanding—his thoroughness, deep knowledge, and passion for Vietnam’s history made every stop incredibly meaningful. He explained everything in such an engaging way and made sure our group was comfortable and well taken care of throughout the entire trip. The experience was both educational and fun, and we left with a much deeper appreciation for the culture and history here. We had a great experience visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels. It was amazing how much we were able to see and learn in such a short amount of time. If we had tried to do this on our own, it would have taken much more time and effort, so the tour was very convenient for us. The price was also very reasonable for the experience. We learned a lot of interesting facts about the history of the tunnels, which made the visit even more meaningful. Our tour guide, Leo, was also very good. he even contacted us the day before the trip to make sure everything was clear and well organized. Also, gave us restaurant and shopping place recommendations. Bonus points as well for the hotel pick-up and drop-off, which made the whole experience even more convenient and hassle-free. Overall, it was a smooth, informative, and enjoyable tour. 😊

What to know about Cu Chi Tunnel

Embark on a Cu Chi tunnels tour, an intricate tunnel network of underground tunnels that played a vital role in the Vietnam War. Serving as a base for the Viet Cong troops, this original tunnel system stretches over 250 kilometers (155 miles), with hidden entrances, living quarters, hospitals, and storage facilities. Situated in Cu Chi District, northwest of Ho Chi Minh City and extending toward the Cambodian border, the tunnels were first built in the late 1940s during the First Indochina War against French colonialists, and later expanded during the Vietnam War. They were designed with hidden trapdoors, ventilation holes disguised as termite mounds, and deadly booby traps to evade the US Army. The tunnels also acted as supply routes and communication channels, enabling surprise attacks on enemy forces. Today, a Cu Chi experience offers visitors the chance to crawl through preserved sections of the tunnels and gain a deeper appreciation of the resilience and tactics that shaped the country’s history.

Cu Chi Tunnels: Things To Discover

Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc Tunnel Crawl Experience

The Cu Chi Tunnels allow visitors to step back into the past and witness Vietnam's wartime struggles. Maps of the tunnel network help guide you through this underground world, where entire villages once thrived. Families and fighters lived below ground to avoid detection by the US Army and American bombers.

One of the most popular activities is the Tunnel Crawl Experience, where you can test yourself in tight spaces to understand the hardships soldiers endured. The tunnels are preserved as a war memorial park, featuring two main sites: the Ben Dinh tunnels and the Ben Duoc tunnels.

  • Ben Dinh tunnels: Often visited on guided tours, these reconstructed sections offer easier access for tourists, allowing you to see conference rooms, kitchens, and displays of booby traps.

  • Ben Duoc tunnels: A more authentic part of the original tunnel system, these tunnels provide a raw, immersive experience, closely resembling how they were used during the war.

Hidden Entrances and Booby Traps

The Cu Chi experience wouldn't be complete without seeing the cleverly disguised entrances and deadly traps. The Viet Cong built "breathing mounds" for air circulation while keeping tunnel openings hidden from the US Army. You'll also see live demonstrations of the booby traps that made the tunnels nearly impossible for invaders to penetrate.

Documentary Rooms

For a deeper dive into Vietnam's history, the onsite documentary rooms showcase footage and exhibits about the famed Cu Chi Tunnels, strategies in the Iron Triangle, and stories from the tunnel rats, the soldiers tasked with navigating and neutralizing the tunnel network.

Live Firing Range At Cu Chi Tunnels

Cu Chi Tunnels offers a live firing range where you can try your hand at shooting authentic weapons used during the Vietnam War. As you fire rounds from firearms, you will be reminded of the intensity and chaos faced by Vietnamese soldiers and American troops on the battlefield.

150-meter dash through the tunnels

At Cu Chi Tunnels, you will have the chance to participate in a 150-meter dash through the tunnels. This interactive experience allows you to crawl through a section of the tunnel system, providing a firsthand understanding of the cramped and dark conditions that Viet Cong soldiers endured.

B-52 Bomb Craters

The B-52 bomb craters near the Cu Chi Tunnels serve as a stark reminder of the intense bombing campaigns that targeted this region during the Vietnam War. These massive craters were created by American bombers and illustrate the devastation wrought upon the landscape and its people.

Ben Duoc Memorial Temple

The Ben Duoc Memorial Temple honors the bravery of the Viet Cong soldiers who fought during the Vietnam War. This temple serves as a place of remembrance and reflection, allowing visitors to pay their respects to those who sacrificed their lives for their country.

There are beautiful gardens and memorials surrounding the temple that are dedicated to various units and individuals who played crucial roles in the struggle for independence. The architecture and design of the temple reflect traditional Vietnamese styles, creating a serene atmosphere.

Handicapped Handicrafts

Visit the Handicapped Handicrafts workshop nearby that supports war victims, many of whom are affected by the lingering effects of Agent Orange (a chemical herbicide used by US military in the Vietnam war). The workshop provides employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, allowing them to create beautiful traditional Vietnamese lacquerware and handicrafts.

Planning Your Cu Chi Tunnel Tour

How To Get To Cu Chi Tunnels

Most travelers join guided Cu Chi tunnel tours departing from Ho Chi Minh City. These tours typically include round-trip transport, tunnel entrance fees, and a guide who can explain the history of the tunnel network.

Independent travelers can also reach the tunnels by bus, taxi, or motorbike, with the Ben Dinh site being closer and easier to access than the more authentic Ben Duoc tunnels.

Which Site to Choose: Ben Dinh vs. Ben Duoc

  • Ben Dinh tunnels: Closer to the city, more tourist-friendly, with widened tunnels for easier crawling and plenty of exhibits. Ideal if you're short on time.

  • Ben Duoc tunnels: Part of the original tunnel system, offering a more authentic experience. Located deeper in the countryside, it gives a better sense of what life was really like during the war.

When to Visit Cu Chi Tunnels

The best time to explore is during the dry season (December to April) when the ground is firm and walking paths are easier. Try to start your tour early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and crowds.

What to Bring To Cu Chi Tunnels

When visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels, it's best to wear lightweight, breathable clothing and sturdy shoes to handle the uneven terrain. Don't forget mosquito spray and bottled water to stay comfortable throughout the tour. Bringing a camera is also recommended so you can capture memorable highlights such as the massive B-52 bomb craters, the solemn Ben Duoc Memorial Temple, and the maze-like tunnels that define this historic site.
