What to expect
The 38th “Shirakawago Winter Illumination Event” in 2024 is coming soon! As a world heritage site and an important traditional architectural reserve, Shirakawa-go is a very well-known and beautiful tourist destination for Japanese people. Although you can visit it on a regular basis, the lighting activities of Shirakawa-go are only held 6 times a year. A precious event that you cannot participate in without making a reservation in advance. The scenery of thatched cottage villages with snowy scenery is romantic and mysterious. It is a must-see tourist attraction in Gifu Prefecture!

Although the stay in the mountains was relatively short this time, I had plenty of time in Gassho Village. The included set meal was also very delicious. The tour guide was very enthusiastic. I really enjoyed this trip!
The tour guides were very attentive and provided me with restaurant information for my reference. Hida beef lunch is quite delicious. The scenery of Shirakawa-go is so beautiful, it feels like you are in a fairy tale world.
You can have lunch by yourself during your stay in Takayama. You have plenty of time to stay in Gassho Village. It’s such a beautiful place. I really enjoyed this trip!

The itinerary is to gather at the point by yourself. The driver (Chinese) will act as the driver, not a tour guide, because he will not introduce any history or stories in detail. At a certain point, I will let you down and move around freely. I’m afraid you didn’t pay attention to the precautions of the event. Please note that the “admission pass” you got is only a pass to enter Gassho Village. You cannot go to the observatory when the lights are lit at night. You can only watch it in the village~ (PS this car The driver knows how to drive fast, so I feel a little dizzy XD)
From a long time ago, I have longed to see the illuminations of Shirakawago. The scenery on the day of the event was beautiful and well worth spending a day there. The tour guide also explained carefully.
The package itinerary is very convenient. It comes with an additional dinner, which saves you the trouble of waiting in line and not necessarily having a seat.

Pretty much left on our own to explore Shirakawa-go village. Unable to go up observatory so 4 hrs to hang around the village till light-up was too long. The set meal with Hida beef was very average & the much touted Hida beef was only do-so. For the price paid, it was not value for money.
The snowy scenery of Gassho House is beautiful, and it looks better during the day than at night. If you want to visit the houses of the Wada family, Kanda family and Nagase family, there is a separate fee for each house.
