What to expect
Experience Introduction
This is a Chaoshan food journey following “Grandma’s Love Letter.” We will, like the Chaoshan ancestors of yesteryear, wander from bustling old streets to lively markets, then to the seaside to watch the sunset, read family letters, and brew Kung Fu tea. You will taste the olives that are bitter first and then sweet, learn to identify the influence of Southeast Asian spices on Chaoshan flavors, personally fry “guo” (rice cakes), brew tea, and read the homesickness of “returning to Tang (China) soon” in overseas Chinese letters. This is not a superficial tour, but a day to recreate the joys and sorrows of our “overseas” ancestors using your mouth, nose, and ears.
Experience Flow Xiaogongyuan Old Arcade: Listen to the stories of the port’s opening (approx. 40 minutes) Take a 1930s old map, walk and listen to the prosperity of Shantou Port and the “Overseas Chinese Song” of that era.
Market: Identify spices, buy “guo”, taste olives (approx. 30 minutes) Identify Southeast Asian spices such as galangal and holy basil Buy “wumiguo” (rice cake without rice) and sweet “guo”, listen to the stories of the “Three Treasures of Overseas Chinese” Chew an “Grandma’s Love Letter” olive, experience the bitterness first, then the sweetness
Xidi Park: Read overseas Chinese letters, brew tea, fry “guo” and watch the sunset (approx. 1.5 hours) See the overseas Chinese letter tile paintings, listen to the homesickness of the “overseas travelers” Learn to brew Kung Fu tea by the sea, fry “wumiguo” and sweet “guo” Eat while watching the sunset, savoring the bittersweet taste of olives and tea
