Stayed in the Hotel Vista when traveling around Kumamoto with the girlfriend. Nice, cheap travelers hotel with friendly, helpful staff and good condition rooms. However, it is a little far from the train station to Kumamoto (about 20 minutes walk.) Also, most sights in the area don't have convenient train or easy bus access, so a rental car is definitely recommended for sightseeing.

I stayed for one night and was in and out in about 10 hours. The room was comfortable and clean. Free WiFi that worked well. Beware that there are smoking rooms.

Stayed with family

Great except location 20 minutes from train station when walking or 5 minutes by taxi. Another 1/2 hour by train to Kumamoto city. The one advantage was there was a 5 minute walk to local market that sold everything from groceries to hardware. Everything was a lot cheaper than in the city.
