What to expect
Feel the tense atmosphere in the sumo stable the moment you step inside with your guide—something that clearly sets morning sumo practice apart from staged “sumo shows.” While shows feature humorous performances and audience interaction with wrestlers (performers), real practice is entirely different: all wrestlers belong to the Japan Sumo Association and are focused solely on climbing the ranks through relentless training. The stable you visit has two top-division wrestlers—watch how grueling it is for lower-ranked wrestlers to challenge them. Though the atmosphere during practice is intense and unapproachable, once off the ring the wrestlers are friendly, and you can take commemorative photos with them.

Reviews
A truly positive experience, far from the tourist shows. Thanks to Yoshihiro, our guide, for his explanations of the rules and presentation of Sumo. This experience allowed us to better understand the culture and the work required during the fights.
amazing and serious experience ! real and full information before to understand the sumo rules and life and then the practice experience. great time to understand japanese culture . I strongly recommend it
Amazing experience. Our guide Jeff, provided great information and the background of sumo wrestling. Guidance where to meet was superb. An experience not to miss.
I really liked the experience of seeing sumo wrestlers, however we arrived at the starting point and there was no one there. We were there 15 minutes before the agreed time and the guide did not arrive. Apparently it was a mistake in the itinerary but on initiative we walked to the gym and they let us pass. Apart from that, it is a worthwhile experience, although since speaking is not allowed, they do not explain much to you. We read a little before going so we could enjoy it better!!
we enjoyed the tour and our guide was very informative.
The tour itself was amazing and I really enjoyed it. But the meeting information given by klook were very unclear, and there was no way to contact the tour agency through klook, in fact I didn't even know what agency it was. It says you can choose between three possible location for the meetup. That sounded very sketchy to me and went ahead on the first one option anyway. I got lucky but after discussing with the guide I understood that if I went to any of the other two I would have been left alone, without any way of contacting the tour operator. I suggest to book directly through the tour's website (look for arumashi) and not through klook.
Good to know
- The sumo practice is a serious daily engagement for the wrestlers. Since it is not a tourist attraction, you must follow simple rules given by your guide before the practice.
- You must stay still and refrain from talking.
- Photo sessions with the sumo wrestlers are most probably possible but not guaranteed
- All participants are required to sit on a cushion placed on a flat floor; no chairs will be provided.
