You’ll find your new furry friends here in a beautiful harbour on the slopes of an extinct volcano and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills. Shamarra Alpacas is just over an hour’s drive from Christchurch Central, and only a 20 minute trip from the historic seaside village of Akaroa. Our panoramic views of Akaroa harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are breath-taking, and will make every one of your selfies with an alpaca post-worthy.
We are open year round, with the scenery changing beautifully through each season and the alpacas staying cute throughou

Reviews
we booked the tour last minute as we are a bit hesitant that the farm is 1.5hrs away from christchurch town. but ended up booking and just decided to take their 11am tour. surprisingly, the alpacas dont have any foul smell and looks like they are well taken cared of. the activity is fun too, you will get the meet and touch the male alpacas first then they will let you feed the female and new borns.
We had a great time at Shamarra alpacas! The guide and feeding experience was super well organised and fun. Highly recommended :) Just a note that the drive up to the farm is steep and windy. Most all cars will get up there; just take your time :)
We had such a wonderful time at this alpaca tour in New Zealand. The farm was beautiful and peaceful, and the alpacas were incredibly gentle and well cared for. One of the highlights was getting to feed the alpacas up close — they were friendly, curious, and absolutely adorable!
Must try experience! Had so much fun at the Farm meeting Alpacas and feeding them. Friendly staff. Very informative.
This is absolutely NZ Must-do!! Very nice farm (and cold🥶) so please wear warm clothings. Staffs are amazingly great and knowledgeable with everything and anything about alpacas. They also provide hot tea and cookies which i think on of the best cookies ive ever tasted!
The environment is beautiful, and the alpacas are well cared for. I booked the tour in Mandarin, and the staff was very enthusiastic and funny, and also offered to take pictures. The whole tour, from the explanation to taking pictures with the alpacas and feeding them, is followed by a choice of coffee, tea, or juice, along with a cookie. The whole experience takes about an hour. Because it's popular, you can't wander around after the tour; they need to prepare for the next group of visitors! Although it's not long, it's definitely worth it. The alpacas don't smell at all, and they're very friendly and super cute.
the tour was very informative and was interactive as we got to touch, hug and feed the apalcas. many to interact with so there are more than enough of them to go around
The people at the farm were very warm and attentive. Everything was perfectly arranged, from parking to introducing the alpacas and interactive photo opportunities. The interaction was very fun, and there were even simple refreshments served after the activity. It was excellent!
Very happy and satisfying experience! The farm is located in a remote mountain area. It is recommended to rent a car or charter a car to go there. After arriving and signing in, a tour guide speaking different languages (English or Mandarin) will soon lead you on a tour. After a brief introduction, you can go to the farm to get up close and personal with the alpacas and feed them! The tour leaders are very nice and the alpacas are very docile and cute!
A very memorable trip. The alpacas are so cute. You can take photos and experience feeding them. The tour guide explains them in great detail, making it worth visiting.
