It was first built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty and underwent multiple expansions and renovations from the Kangxi to Tongzhi periods of the Qing Dynasty. Shibaozhai is a national key cultural relics protection unit, a national scenic spot, a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, a Chinese Overseas Chinese International Cultural Exchange Base, a civilized tourism scenic spot in Chongqing, and one of the first historical gardens in Chongqing.
- Shibaozhai integrates natural and cultural landscapes. The architectural complex consists of six parts: the entrance road, the mountain gate, the stockade tower, Kuixing Pavilion, Tianzi Hall, and the mountain-descending plank road. The stockade tower is one of the existing multi-story穿斗式 (chuan-dou-shi, a type of timber frame structure) wooden buildings in China, showcasing the superb architectural achievements of ancient Chinese working people.
