Put some real spin to your island escape with a coconut oil making class with a Balinese family living in the beautiful and tranquil Taro Village, one of the popular countryside destinations on the island. Witness and blend with the locals on this guided activity as you're brought to a native Balinese home, where you will be welcomed with a fresh herbal tea before moving on to the class. For the next two hours, you will be introduced to a variety of indigenous tools in extracting the oil from the husks. Afterwards, you'll be toured around the village and appreciate its rich landscapes, affluent resources, and learning more about their raw materials that they transform into local souvenirs made of high quality Balinese silver and gold.

The class is held in a traditional Balinese family courtyard. Upon entering, you'll be offered refreshments (crispy and delicious fried glutinous rice cakes 😋) and tea. Then, you'll be introduced to the different types of coconuts and what they are used for (orange ones are for offerings, green ones are for making coconut oil, but they need to be dried first). Next, you'll experience how to crack open a coconut and extract the meat. Be very careful! The tool is used to press down and pry the coconut meat up, not to dig upwards! Please note, I accidentally cut a big gash in my hand. The teacher reacted quickly, immediately giving me turmeric to stop the bleeding and also explaining that turmeric has hemostatic and skin-restoring properties! Turmeric is also added to the coconut oil when it's cooked! So it's all very good for the body 👌. The process of making coconut oil is very complicated, and a small bottle is hard-earned. Finally, there will be coconut milk residue, which is super delicious 😋 and tastes exactly like coconut candy 👅. The teacher will also take you to visit his small orchard, which has many fruits! He even offered me snake fruit, passion fruit, and coconut meat. The teacher said I was very lucky to have such a sweet snake fruit (it's crunchy and tastes like pineapple but super sweet, not sour). It's a great experience, and the coconut oil you make can also be given as a souvenir to friends!
I had such an amazing time making coconut oil today. It was very interesting to see all what goes into producing the oil. The guide was patient and explained everything to me in detail. We even got to walk around the farm and feed the scraps to the chickens! Would recommend!
It was a very good experience. The teacher also introduced the culture of Bali very seriously. I really need to come here to experience this course. This ancient village is very beautiful. We start by cutting the coconut shell, taking coconut water, digging out coconut meat, grinding coconut powder, soaking the coconut powder in a 1:1 ratio of water and coconut water, then heating it for the first time to take out most of the oil and water, and then heating it for the second time. Finally, we got our own natural coconut oil. This experience is really worth it!
It was a very enjoyable travel product. From wearing a sarung and peeling coconuts to turning them into oil, it was all an enjoyable experience. Coconut meat can also be fed to chickens and pigs. I have been using the coconut oil I made throughout my trip to Bali. And everyone is so friendly :)
This was such a unique and enjoyable experience! I highly recommend it if you're looking for something special. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted warmly, and they offered us tea and nurungji while introducing the class. They demonstrated the entire process, from cracking the coconut to grinding and boiling it, and then helped us do it ourselves. While it was boiling, they explained various fruits and the local culture, which was very interesting! It's meaningful because I made the coconut oil myself, and the coconut scent is lovely, making me happy every time I use it. I'm leaving with a great product! 💕
Such a cool experience!!.. I'm so glad I booked this activity.. It's really interesting how coconut oil is made.. simply but alot goes into it..Thank you so much.. I truly recommend
Simply the best! A must-do. They offer welcome drinks, snacks, and seasonal fruits, and you can learn about the local culture. They even let you try on traditional skirts for photos, which is so good.
This was the happiest experience I had during my time in Bali! The warm-hearted people, the peaceful atmosphere, and even the adorable dog(Griffin❤️) made it truly special. Although it’s located in the countryside of Ubud, convenient pickup and drop-off service is available for an extra fee. You get to feed pigs and chickens, learn all about coconuts, and gain insight into Balinese family traditions. The coconut oil making session was not easy but truly memorable. If you’re curious about *the secret ingredient* that makes their coconut oil so special, this is a must-visit! Hehe Highly recommended for anyone looking for an authentic and enriching experience.
The hosts were wonderful and really engaged us in the process, made sure the children had the opportunity to be a part of every step and were really friendly and encouraging, even when my young son had a meltdown they were supportive and inclusive. They showed us around the property, let us hand feed the animals and let the children pick ripe passionfruit from their vine to eat. It was a great experience and I would encourage others to join this class and learn the process.
I watched it on YouTube and it looked so fun that I made a reservation for the same product. I took the course alone without anyone else, and it was really fun because it was a course I had never done before in my life. It was so much fun to open a coconut myself, feed coconut powder to the animals, and blow it to separate the milk and oil.
