Crafting Silk Lampshades: A Traditional Winding Experience in Fukui
- Choose your favorite silk thread color and create a lampshade with your preferred pattern
- The process is simple, making it enjoyable for a wide range of ages
- The wooden frames and silk threads used for the lampshades are authentic materials, allowing you to experience Katsuyama's textile history
- The experience takes about 30 minutes. You can take your finished piece home immediately
- As a textile museum, you can observe the manufacturing process of silk habutae fabric
- There is also a souvenir shop inside the museum where you can purchase local souvenirs
What to expect
A memorial hall where you can learn about the history and techniques of Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture’s traditional textile industry. A facility utilizing a textile factory built in 1904 (Meiji 37) where you can experience Katsuyama’s history and the world of weaving. Hands-on experiences like hand weaving and silk cocoon crafting are hugely popular.
① Please complete registration. ② We will explain the process. (10 minutes) ③ Choose your preferred colored thread from the selection provided. ④ Use the reeling machine to wind your chosen colored thread onto the wooden frame. ⑤ Winding different colored threads creates a unique piece. ⑥ Attach the LED light to complete your creation. ⑦ You may take your finished piece home with you.
