What to expect
Experience the joy of traditional mochi-making in the heart of Asakusa! At Hanbei, you’ll use a real wooden mallet and mortar to pound freshly steamed glutinous rice, just like it’s been done for generations. With friendly support, even first-timers can shout “Yoisho!” and enjoy the rhythm of mochi-making.
After pounding, you’ll cut and shape your own mochi, then enjoy four classic flavors: kinako (roasted soybean flour), matcha, kuromitsu (brown sugar syrup), and grated daikon. Relax upstairs in a beautiful tatami room while savoring your handmade mochi with a cup of authentic matcha.
You’ll wear a traditional happi coat for the full experience, and photo-taking is encouraged! You’ll also get a small mochi souvenir and an easy recipe card to take home.
