What to expect

During the cherry blossom season (March to the end of April), all tea ceremony experiences are personally hosted by Manabu Ito. I come from a family that served as official gardeners to the Tokugawa Shogunate, with a tradition connected to the cultivation of Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms. For generations, we have practiced tea ceremony and calligraphy, and I use utensils passed down from my ancestors. In this seasonal experience, you will enjoy an authentic tea ceremony while learning its history, cultural meaning, and the care of tea utensils. You will observe a demonstration, prepare matcha yourself, and join a Q&A session. You can also appreciate Kyoto’s traditional culture through ikebana and higashi (dry sweets), along with rare items such as hanging scrolls, tea bowls, and kettles.

Review for: Table-Style Tea Ceremony Experience in Ninenzaka Kyoto

We booked the tea ceremony spontaneously in the morning, and it was a unique and very special experience that was definitely a highlight of our trip through Japan. The etiquette surrounding Japanese tea is explained excellently. And the performance by the master is impressive. Afterward, you make your own matcha, which was also very interesting. Overall, highly recommended!

My husband and I absolutely loved this experience. This was a stand out experience of our Kyoto trip. The session was a small group setting with the Tea Master and his Assistant. In our session we had Tea Master Mana and Assistant Nikko who stepped us through the history, importance and steps of a tea ceremony before proceeding with the ceremony itself. we then were able to make our own matcha afterwards. Both Mana and Nikko were incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. You can also rent kimonos to wear during the ceremony for a small fee. We would highly recommend this tour!

I never expected to have such a wonderful experience in my life. The hospitality and friendliness of the Tea Master and his assistant will remain a beautiful memory of my vacation, along with the cups we purchased after the ceremony.

It was an unforgettable experience. We got the kimono accessory (very affordable, by the way). The ceremony was a peaceful oasis in a fast-paced trip through Japan and Korea. Steep stairs make it a bit difficult if you have reduced mobility.

A truly wonderful activity 🥰 Despite a scheduling issue when booking through the platform, the team was very accommodating in adapting to our schedule. The experience is very intimate, with only 6 guests. Perfect for those seeking an authentic adventure away from mass tourism 😉.

What an amazing experience!! One I will remember for a very long time. I chose a seated experience as I struggle to sit on the floor. I was with 5 other people and we sat on stools at tables. We were given an introduction from Nikko whose English was amazing in an outer room. We went into a second room for the ceremony. Each part was explained and Tea Master Mana showed us exactly what we needed to do. I had hired a kimono in a different experience but there was chance on the day to wear the outer garment Kimono or Haori for photos. There was plenty of time to get photos at each step. This was a very zen experience making the matcha tea during the ceremony. Such a great location, just of Ninenzaka. Thank you so much for welcoming me and allowing me to join in the ceremony with you.
