What to expect
Gather at Fukuoka Hakata Station and check off three major natural landmarks of Kyushu in one day! Have you ever thought about seeing volcanoes, riding horses, and boating through waterfall canyons in Japan? This one-day tour route has it all arranged!
- Mount Aso Nakadake Crater (approx. 30 minutes stay) This is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes! You will get a close-up view of the smoking crater, feeling the energy and awe from deep within the earth. If weather permits, you might even see the mysterious volcanic lake – a dreamy green-blue, like something from another planet.
- Key fact: Mount Aso is one of the world’s largest calderas and appeared in “Attack on Titan”! Mount Aso has recently been closed due to a helicopter accident and will be replaced by a 30-minute visit to Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine. We appreciate your understanding.
- Kusasenri (approx. 60 minutes stay) A boundless green grassland stretches at the foot of Mount Aso. Cattle and horses graze leisurely in the pasture, and the breeze sways the grass, making it a “natural filter scene” in the hearts of countless photographers. You can take a leisurely stroll, experience horse riding (at your own expense), or simply sit on the grass and daydream. It’s truly therapeutic here.
- Photo tips: Light dress, straw hat, looking into the distance with a side profile – instantly capture a blockbuster travel photo!
- Takachiho Gorge (optional boat experience, approx. 60 minutes stay) [Solo travelers will share a boat with other passengers, please understand] This is one of Japan’s most mysterious gorges, and also the legendary hiding place of Amaterasu Omikami. You will ride a hand-rowed boat through the narrow gorge, with vertical basalt cliffs on both sides and the Takachiho Waterfall cascading down above your head, like a dream! The entire gorge’s water surface is like a mirror, with boat reflections and inverted images intertwined, breathtakingly beautiful – this is a “spiritual place” that many Japanese people want to visit at least once in their lives. From the heat of the volcano to the coolness of the gorge, every stop is worth your time. Note ⚠️: The Takachiho boat tour requires 2-3 people per boat. Solo travelers will share a boat with other tour members. In case of force majeure leading to the cancellation of the boat tour, a refund of 2000 JPY per person will be issued. This itinerary includes the Mount Aso shuttle fee (the Mount Aso shuttle bus is a complimentary item; if Mount Aso is temporarily closed, related fees are non-refundable and non-changeable. We appreciate your understanding.)

Reviews
Reviews summaryWe had a wonderful time on our trip to Takachiho George, despite the unfortunate cancellation of our boat ride due to the rising tide, which we had no control over. Apart from that, all the places we visited, starting with the majestic Mt. Aso, the serene Kamishikimi Shrine, and the breathtaking Takachiho George, were truly picturesque. Japan has truly blessed us with its stunning natural beauty. Our tour guide, Nicole Yang, was incredibly helpful and made our trip enjoyable. She speaks both English and Mandarin fluently, and her English is good, making it easy for us to understand her. The travel time from Hakata to Mt. Aso or Takachiho George is approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Please remember to bring some food, as the journey can be quite long. However, the trip will stop on the expressway both ways to Hakata, so you’ll have a chance to use the restroom. We hope to book this trip again in the future and finally get to ride the boat! 😇
the tourist (h) was really nice and helpful. He did great research before our trip and deeply explain the history and landmarks which i really appreciate. During the last station when me and my daughter wasnt sure about the way back, he came to assist us once he was notified. Great tourism overall.
《Regarding the Tour Guide and Service Experience》 Our tour guide for this trip, Eiichi, was incredibly thoughtful and kind. Although he is a local Japanese, he was able and willing to explain things in both English and Chinese, accommodating travelers with different language backgrounds. He also reminded us about the route and safety precautions. Before the trip, he even sent a written itinerary explanation and food recommendations. Compared to other experiences where I've often taken elderly family members on similar tours, sometimes the Chinese explanations were skipped, leading to them not understanding, or the tour simply went through each spot without detailed historical explanations or important notes. This experience, however, was excellent. 《Regarding the Itinerary》 Our visit was in May and June, which coincided with Japan's rainy season. Although I checked the weather beforehand, the mountain weather is indeed unpredictable, with rain stopping and starting. Here are some tips for travelers planning this itinerary during this period: 1. Raincoats are more practical than umbrellas: This tour involves continuous walking. If you want to take good photos and move around easily, choosing a stylish raincoat or a clear umbrella would be more convenient. 2. You might not need to book the Takachiho boat ride: As shown in the photos, if it rains, the water level rises, and there's a high probability that the boat service will be suspended. The platform initially stated that if suspended, a refund of 2,000 JPY would be issued. However, the original cost of booking the boat ride was actually close to 4,000 JPY. Therefore, if there's a risk of rain, I recommend not even considering the boat ride. 3. Lunch arrangements: Lunch is at the scenic restaurant in Kusasenri, where you can enjoy Kumamoto beef from Kyushu. However, because time is quite tight, if you want to take good photos and climb to spots with good views, you might not have time for lunch. You could buy food at a convenience store along the way in the morning to maximize your photo-taking time.
Our guide Eiichi was so dependable and very good in relaying all the information that we need in this tour. I truly enjoy the tour and the highlight was the Takachiho Gorge boat rowing. The tour went so smoothly and the driver also drove smoothly. I highly recommend the tour for those looking for a nice day tour from Fukuoka.
Our tour guide for this trip is Xiao Wang, from Harbin. Along the way, he'll share stories and knowledge about various attractions, and he's very enthusiastic! We were quite lucky this time; a few days ago, I saw online that when it rained, it was completely foggy and you couldn't see anything, which made me a bit worried. Today (6/5) is sunny and bright. Our first stop was Kusasenri, where we had lunch and took photos, avoiding the main crowds, before heading to the shrine, and finally to Takachiho. It was a shame that we couldn't go boating due to the high water levels from the recent rain, and in the afternoon, a light rain meant we couldn't see the beautiful blue river from the online pictures. However, the overall itinerary was still quite reasonable. The trip is heavily dependent on the weather, and there are quite a few slopes to climb, so I recommend checking the weather forecast after booking your tour.
This was a very worthwhile 1-day trip. All the planned attractions were covered, but on the day we went (May 28, 2026), the weather was bad with poor visibility due to very thick fog. We couldn't see anything at Kusasenri. Our guide, Yaoyao, adjusted the time from 1 hour to 40 minutes there and added that time to Takachiho Gorge instead. This was a good adjustment based on the actual situation. Our guide had excellent English and provided detailed information in both English and Chinese. Regarding the return journey, some participants who went kayaking returned to the bus late, and there was intermittent traffic, causing us to arrive back at Hakata Station over an hour late. If I were to offer advice, for anyone who has dinner reservations an hour after the trip, that might not be enough time. It would be better to allow 1.5 to 2 hours for dinner reservations.
We had a very good time with this one day trip! Our guide was very friendly and informative. I really enjoyed the way she explained the history and background of each place. Your storytelling made the experience much more engaging. I also appreciated all the recommendations she shared, such as what spots shouldn’t be missed, and how much time to allow for each location. Your advice made it much easier to plan the rest of my trip and use my time efficiently.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t visit the Mount Aso crater due to the recent helicopter accident… quite sad that we missed this place 😭 Instead, the itinerary was changed to Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine. Kusasenri and Takachiho Gorge had really beautiful scenery too, but unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to spend longer there.
Money well spent to & fro from Hakata to Takachiho Gorge. Guide Zhang Chao knows the areas well and peppered the ride with stories and facts (eg I now know there’s a 3,000yo cone in Mt Aso volcanic cluster, that looks like a giant pimple). He also showed us the kost scenic spots to take our photos! Pit stops were well planned and the tour group of 47 were managed with a timely schedule. Totally refreshing out in nature and worth the day!
Overall trip was well planned and hassle free! Mt Aso crater was closed but we went to Takamori instead. It was such a calming and scenic place. Tour guide, Nicole Yang, was very clear and articulate with directions as well as history of the monuments and attractions. It would be great if more time was allocated to Mt Aso! And Takachiho Gorge was amazing too, looks identical to the picture advertised on the tour package :)
