I wish they gave more specific control on seating, but this was the only way to book the JR Shinano train that I found. It was a very pleasant ride tho! One thing to note, if you are connecting to this from a shinkansen from Kyoto, I recommend giving yourself more time than you think. Our train was slightly late and we BARELY made it onto this train before the doors closed. Nagoya station was a little confusing and it was a bit stressful getting on board. But we made it and the ride itself was good!
