FantasticStayed with kids
We had a wonderful stay as a family of five visiting from London. The ryokan was spotless, the traditional Japanese breakfast was amazing, and the staff were incredibly kind, helpful, and accommodating throughout our stay. They made us feel so welcome, and we would highly recommend this ryokan to anyone visiting Takayama.

If you would like the experience of staying in a Japanese Ryokan then this is a great option. The staff are super helpful and speak good English. It's about 1km from the station but by uber that's 5mins and 1000yen

Below averageStayed with partner
The building is beautiful. But it is located next to a busy road, very noisy to sleep at night. They even provide cheep ear plugs which are useless. Need taxi service to get to the old city and downtown. Walk is through industrial part of town. Food is mediocre, with unlimited cheep candies. Extra fee for a private onsen with no view and road pollution, even though they provide cheap juice. Not worth the high price of stay. Tried to cancel the second night due to sleepless night, but the owner refused refund. The only good thing are the nice employees.

FantasticStayed with family
We wanted a ryokan experience and that is what we received. The hotel is over 100 years old but very well maintained and there were onsens there to relax. The private onsen was especially nice. The staff were excellent and very welcoming and friendly and really made our experience special. I highly recommend their Japanese breakfast.

FantasticStayed with partner
Room was spotless and staff were very nice and helpful (they do go above and beyond). The room was spacious enough (we got the comfort room) and comfortable for my partner and I. It didn’t come with an irori but had a nice bath.
It is about a half an hour leisurely walk to the main city area where all the things are happening. I found it to be an easy walk. There are a few restaurants and convenience stores close by. It was a relaxing getaway! The Kaiseki breakfast was a good experience and we also rented the private onsen. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

FantasticStayed with partner · For leisure
An absolutely must stay in Takayama. The ryokan has everything that embodies the Japanese spirit with all the comforts that you need.
The ryokan despite being over a 100 years old is incredibly comfortable with spotless rooms, that are generously sized for you to feel both comfortable and at home.
The standout, however, is not the cozy nature of the ryokan, or the countless little touches they have throughout that make you feel at home but the spectacular staff.
The staff are welcoming, courteous and make every effort for you to have an enjoyable stay. They are incredibly hospitable and helped us on numerous occasions with restaurant bookings (as we did not have a local Japanese number) as well as assisting us after our stay with lost property (not at the ryokan either!).
I would not hesitate to come back to Gifu just to stay at the Hidaya again.

Fantastic We had a really great experience staying at this traditional Japanese hotel, really friendly and helpful staff made our stay very enjoyable. We had plenty of help with finding local attractions and restaurants and even booking taxis and making reservations for restaurants. The common areas were really clean and cosy. We requested to change our room free of extra charge, which was really great as not all rooms have showers inside bathrooms.

FantasticStayed with family · For friends and family
The staff are warm, helpful, clear in giving guidance. The breakfast was sumptuous. We had a family suite with two rooms. The only thing we wish it could be better is to have a shower room in the suite. However we enjoyed the public onsen bath, with a shower room. The place was spotless, authentically decorated, well-preserved Japanese culture and hospitality. Thank you!
