Kawa Kawa Wildlife & Fireflies River Cruise in Sabah

Tour guide John spoke entirely in Chinese throughout the tour because the entire group spoke Chinese. We were lucky enough to see proboscis monkeys and fireflies like a Christmas tree waterfall (my phone couldn't capture it, but the tour guide provided photos as souvenirs). Having the fireflies gently land on my hand was a wonderful experience. The tour guide also introduced Durian Street (I walked past it the day before and thought they were just regular stalls, the tour guide didn't explain it. I also learned about Sabah fruit and durian which only come from Sabah and are cheaper. If you like durian, you can try it). He also introduced Gaya Street, and after the firefly tour on weekends, you can get off here to take a stroll. Experience: Excellent

Relax trip, value for money. well plan and nice dinner provided. hotel pickup and drop off is the plus one. wild life trips must depend on your luck, not 100% can see the monkey, firefly 100% can see and it was amazing. boat man use light to attract the firefly to come towards you. very nice.

I love this tour because it was chill and not rushing things. We had a smooth river cruise, saw some Proboscis Monkeys, crocodiles and kingfisher birds. We had a beautiful sunset as well. It’s a shame that it rained during our fireflies watching but we were able to see some of them. There were free snacks and tea and buffet dinner as well. The guide John was superb and accommodating. Will definitely try this tour again next time.

Super value for money. At the first attraction, you can choose whether to take photos at the floating mosque at your own expense, and the reserved time is also sufficient. Later in the trip we went to see proboscis monkeys. The tour guide and the captain would try their best to find them and then take turns taking photos for everyone. When it came time for dinner, the food was not what I was looking forward to, but I ended up having it twice and it really went well with the meal. The following sunset happened to be a cloudy day that turned into nice weather. Because it was so beautiful, the tour guide allowed us 5 more minutes to take pictures. Finally, the fireflies are so beautiful that it is indescribable. It is really touching to see them glowing together in the same forest at the same time. Before starting, I thought that since there were only a bunch of fireflies in Taiwan, it would be okay, but in the end, I was glad that I chose this itinerary.

highly recommended! the trip is very well organised, we particularly appreciated the stops at some cozy little cafes surrounded by nature where we could enjoy tea, coconut pudding while relaxing and taking nice pics of the surroundings. Our guide Mok was very friendly and energetic and immediately made us feel at ease. last but not least, the fireflies experience was magical, honestly beyond expectations!

Our guide, Mok, was punctual and picked us up right on time. Since 7 out of the 9 of us understood Chinese, he mostly spoke in Chinese, but I appreciated how well he accommodated everyone. We started with a visit to the Floating Mosque, followed by a quick stop for some delicious coconut pudding and fruit before embarking on a 1.5-hour drive to Kota Belud. Upon arrival, we enjoyed a lovely high tea before boarding the boat for a river cruise. We were lucky enough to spot three types of monkeys, a few crocodiles, and other wildlife along the way. Dinner was then served. Then we went to watch sunset at Nanamun Beach. However, the best part of the trip was definitely the fireflies! It was like a mesmerizing firefly show—truly one of the most magical experiences I’ve ever had in my life. The entire trip lasted from 1 PM to 8:30 PM, and I totally recommend it. Worth the money. A fantastic experience, especially for nature lovers!

My family and I had a very good experience for this tour. The tour company contacted us beforehand to make the necessary prior arrangements. Our guide Elvis was also helpful and informative. We didn't manage to spot the proboscis monkey but caught some photos of some wild monkeys. The fireflies we encountered during the night cruise were the highlight of the tour. Thanks to the boatmen and assistant who made it magical by attracting them close to the boat. We had a great time!

During the approximately 2-hour drive from downtown KK, the tour guide worked very hard to find proboscis monkeys and introduce the mangroves. I was not very lucky that day and did not see the proboscis monkeys. In fact, it did not affect my interest very much. The whole road was quite fresh and there were sightings. Macaques and otters! Looking up at the starry sky at night, the fireflies flashing around the corner and the stars in the woods are an amazing dreamy scene. The guide (Timothy) was activated the night before and he messaged me to inform in advance on pick up time. He came on time for pick up the next day. The first stop was the famous mosque by the lagoon. Didn't get down as I was not keen to take photos. Went straight to eat the Coconut pudding next, with a slice of watermelon on the side. Then we went to the cottage by the river which was a homestay. Got some snacks there before going for an afternoon cruise. Unfortunately, I couldn't get to see much of the proboscis monkey that day as they were probably hiding deep in the trees. Ended the river cruise and went back to take the minibus to the beach. No nice sunset view as it was wet season and too cloudy, but being by the beach was still nice. Came back for dinner which was roughly an hour. Slightly short to eat steamboat though. After dinner, we went for a night cruise to see the fireflies. Quite a number of them are on the trees by the river. Overall it was a good experience, with transportation provided to/fro and guide who is bilingual and responsive. Fruitful trip and luckily the rain stopped in the afternoon.
