Hands-On Craft Workshop (Kyoto)

Learn from an amazing artisan who is friendly, animated and keen to share his knowledge about his craft. google translate is on hand. my son made a key chain, whilst my daughter, husband and I made hairpins. he ki day shared history that made the experience so worth it. the establishment is the shop and workshop, but was once where he lived. Gave us gifts which he shared the meaning of too. we have been in Japan for a month and this was a favourite. give it a go. you will have something to take home but the memory of sharing stories will be the highlight

This was a lovely way to spend time during a rainy afternoon. We got to do the craft in a tiny house, sitting cross legged at the table. We chose the coloured bead and threads, then started plaiting the threads. Very pleased with the result. Took about 40 minutes.

amazing workshop! it was inside an amazing house and the shopowners are very patient with us. they speak English and instructions were very easy to follow. we made braided strap charms and earrings. highly recommended

I enjoyed my Washi earring making experience very much! I had a lovely time chatting with the proprietress and she taught very well. The workshop takes place above a shop where handcrafted goods are sold, and there were many different patterns of washi paper and earring designs to choose from! There were also quite a few other workshops / crafts available and I chose to also make a braided strap and two hair sticks, which was possible although I had not booked in advance. I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone interested in Japanese crafts!

We absolutely loved this handmade workshop! We went in to make a hairpin for my mother-in-law, and the couple hosting it were incredibly sweet. With the help of a translator, they explained everything in detail and were so warm and welcoming—even to my husband, who hadn’t signed up but sat through the session. They still shared with him all the fascinating details about their craft. The bamboo they use is around 350 years old, a type that’s no longer available, and they were so open in sharing its history. The workshop took place in a beautiful machiya (traditional townhouse) that’s over 100 years old, which made the whole experience even more special. The session was short—about 30–45 minutes—but wonderfully memorable, and very reasonably priced. Instead of just buying a hairpin, I’d highly recommend making one yourself here. You’ll not only leave with something beautiful but also gain an appreciation for the tradition, history, and the genuinely kind people behind it.

Absolutely wonderful! For a fun experience on top of learning about Kyoto from the personal experiences of a local, I highly recommend booking any number of these workshops. Plus, if you're looking for gifts to bring back home, they have a variety of handmade accessories made with love and filled with Kyoto culture and history. And don't worry about a language barrier, any translator app will break down that wall in no time. We had an amazing time!!

I went with my wife and I instantly got hooked. The host and his wife are very friendly and speak English. They will guide you through every step and make sure your origami is done well. we’ll deserved authentic experience. don’t miss out

couple was very knowledgeable about the items used to make hair pin and explained the history of the bamboo and other items in the store. Loved the uniqueness of the store, would do again! Do it if your in Kyoto

This is an old family owned workshop and the couple don’t speak english very well, but they do their best and also use google translate to communicate some history and make small talk. The ladies english skill is good for some easy topics and it was a great experience over all. Following the steps is easy, because they demonstrate every step in an easy to understand way.

I actually enjoyed this process as I felt it was more hands on. Your aregiven instructions in English so you can take your time.
