It is a branch of the Qionglai Mountains and is famous for its “secluded beauty under heaven.” Zhang Daoling founded the Tianshi Dao (Celestial Masters’ Way) here during the Eastern Han Dynasty, making it a birthplace of Taoism and one of the four famous Taoist mountains, known as the “Fifth Grotto-heaven.” In 2000, it was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site along with Dujiangyan. It is a national 5A-level scenic area, divided into Front Mountain (concentrated Taoist temples) and Back Mountain (natural scenery), with the Tianshi Cave as the core of its temples.
