Even though I don't understand Chinese, I found it very entertaining! The songs were lovely, the tea was delicious, and there were tons of sunflower seeds!
i recommend this activity, although : the staff and singers are kind but speak only Chinese. the entry to the show and introduction of songs will be confusing, maybe bring a Chinese friend to get the full experience. 2) it is complicated to get to the show but the tour guide was reactive enough. it is in a very tight alley where the taxi driver can't drive you there, and the klook map is not it!! please follow 11 Nanshizi street ONLY. 3) it was a little confusing because they kindly let us arrive a little early, 19:40 instead of 20 so we saw the end of the 19h show. we didn't disturb the peace of the show, but the same happened during our show with 20 people. it was amazing, but people were eating the seeds given and letting them on the ground, while sometimes speaking, being on their phone or even answering a phone call next to me. i still recommend if you hadnt the opportunity to witness Chinese music. maybe book an afternoon spot so its less crowded and cleaner
it was really beautiful and poetic . I loved it

Guide

  • Traditional Pingtan Performances Professional Pingtan performers present classic pieces such as “The Pearl Pagoda” and “The Legend of the White Snake” in the soft Suzhou dialect during fixed daily slots, interspersed with humorous Suzhou folk tunes. During the performance, actors interact with the audience, for example, teaching them to say a few phrases like “ni hao” (hello) in Suzhou dialect, creating a relaxed and engaging atmosphere.
  • Tea Ceremony + Pingtan Package Order a pot of Biluochun or jasmine tea, paired with Suzhou pastries (such as Haitang Cake, Mung Bean Cake), and enjoy Pingtan while sipping tea. In an old wooden house, with an Eight Immortals table, lidded tea bowls, and the sound of Pingtan echoing through the beams, you are instantly transported back to the bustling market life of old Suzhou teahouses.
  • Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Occasionally, activities like Suzhou fan painting and embroidery experiences are held, guided by inheritors of intangible cultural heritage. Irregularly, there are sharing sessions on Suzhou folklore and garden culture themes, accompanied by explanations of Pingtan performance segments.

Pingjiang Road, an old street carrying a thousand years of Suzhou's history and culture. In this quaint street, Shendetang Pingtan Teahouse shines like a brilliant pearl, exuding unique charm.

Stepping into the teahouse, it feels as if you’ve traveled back in time. Wooden tables and chairs, intricately carved doors and windows, everywhere reveals the grace and refinement of Jiangnan water towns. Order a cup of fragrant tea, sit down, and quietly await the start of the Pingtan performance. The performers, dressed in traditional costumes and holding a pipa and sanxian, captivate the entire audience from their very first note.

Pingtan repertoire is rich and diverse, featuring classic traditional pieces as well as new works adapted from modern stories. The performers, with their exquisite skills, bring every story to life.

At Shendetang Pingtan Teahouse, you can not only enjoy wonderful Pingtan performances but also savor authentic Suzhou dim sum.

The service here is also very thoughtful, with warm and friendly staff providing attentive service.

The Shendetang experience is like a "gentle baptism of Jiangnan culture"; visitors often leave with a deeper affection for Suzhou. Some exclaim: "This place made me understand why people say 'Suzhou people live in poetry'." If you are tired of superficial sightseeing, why not experience Suzhou's soul and charm through a Pingtan performance?
