Kyushu: Mount Aso, Kusasenri & Takachiho Gorge Day Tour (Optional Takachiho Boat Ride Experience)

This one-day tour to Takachiho Gorge, Kusasenri, and Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine was exceptionally well-planned, with a comfortable pace. We didn't feel tired from too many attractions, nor did we experience excessive waiting times. The trip perfectly blended natural scenery, cultural experiences, and relaxation. Our tour guide, Mr. Ohashi, provided explanations fluently in both Chinese and Korean. He clearly communicated meeting times, boarding and alighting procedures, and all important注意事项 (points of attention). He also shared the history, culture, and local stories behind each attraction, making the journey more than just sightseeing; it offered a deeper understanding of Kyushu's human and natural characteristics. Mr. Ohashi was friendly, meticulous, and managed time perfectly, allowing everyone to enjoy the trip with peace of mind. The first stop was the long-anticipated Takachiho Gorge. Famous for its spectacular columnar jointed gorge and the Manai Waterfall, it was even more breathtaking in person than in photos. The emerald green stream, towering rock walls on both sides, and the waterfall intertwined to create a natural masterpiece that was truly unforgettable. We experienced boating, which allowed us to admire the waterfall and gorge up close, an impressive highlight. After leaving Takachiho, we headed to Kusasenri, a renowned spot in the Aso region. The vast grasslands, combined with the majestic topography of Mount Aso, presented a natural landscape distinctly different from Takachiho. The weather was excellent that day, offering expansive views, and we could clearly appreciate the magnificent terrain around the crater. Mr. Ohashi explained the formation process of Mount Aso, its volcanic activity history, and the origin of Kusasenri. While enjoying the scenery, we also learned how this land evolved over a long period to become what it is today. Standing on the vast grassland, we felt exceptionally relaxed and deeply appreciated the charm of Kyushu's natural landscapes. Finally, we arrived at Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine. As we ascended the stone steps, moss-covered stone lanterns lined both sides, surrounded by dense forests, creating a mysterious and tranquil atmosphere. Mr. Ohashi introduced the shrine's history and origins, and also shared that it had been a filming location for movies and anime. Throughout the entire journey, Mr. Ohashi provided rich explanations and took care of every group member. He proactively reminded us of meeting times, recommended the best photo spots, suggested local specialties worth purchasing, and constantly checked if everyone was present, maintaining a relaxed yet efficient pace for the entire group. Even during long drives, he interspersed his commentary with insights into the history, culture, and daily life of the Kumamoto, Aso, and Takachiho regions, adding depth to the overall trip. Overall, this was a well-planned and high-quality one-day tour. The astonishing beauty of Takachiho's gorge, the vast and magnificent natural landscape of Kusasenri and Mount Aso, and the serene and mysterious forest atmosphere of Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine—these three attractions were distinct and non-repetitive, making the day's itinerary full of variety and surprises. I highly recommend this tour, and especially recommend our guide, Mr. Ohashi. His professional explanations, meticulous service, and extensive experience made this trip more than just admiring beautiful scenery; it provided a deeper understanding of Kyushu's history, culture, and nature. If I participate in another Kyushu day tour in the future, I would definitely hope to be led by Mr. Ohashi again, as I believe it would be another fulfilling and enjoyable journey.

This tour covered Mount Aso, Takachiho Gorge, and a shrine, and it was truly a magnificent and grand spectacle that anyone visiting Kyushu must see. It seems these places are not yet widely known among Korean tourists, as our family was the only Korean group, which made the experience feel even more exotic and special. Takachiho Gorge was even more beautiful than in the pictures, and the boat tour, allowing us to enjoy the gorge up close, was truly unique and memorable. Unfortunately, strong winds prevented us from fully entering the Kusasenri Plain on Mount Aso, but the view of the volcanic smoke in the distance combined with the vast grasslands was absolutely spectacular. Even the scenery from the car during our travels was astonishing. Finally, our guide mentioned that Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine was the setting for the anime 'Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light.' Perhaps because we watched a YouTube summary on the way, the dreamlike and mysterious atmosphere created by the dense cedar forest and stone lanterns left an even deeper impression. Lastly, I want to express my sincere gratitude to our guide, Mr. Ohashi! As our family was the only Korean group, we might have felt a bit left out, but he went out of his way to provide a separate Korean guide just for us and showed incredible thoughtfulness by checking on our sick child frequently during our travels. Thanks to Mr. Ohashi, our entire family was able to complete the tour comfortably and enjoyably. I hope more Koreans visiting Kyushu will have the chance to experience these wonderful places!

Thanks to Mr. Ohashi, we had a truly fulfilling and enjoyable day trip! As a solo traveler, I was incredibly happy to see Mount Aso, which I thought would be difficult to visit due to transportation challenges. The weather was clear and fog-free, allowing us to see all the scenery, and I was happy to take a light stroll while enjoying some refreshing milk ice cream. Before arriving at each destination, he funnily explained the characteristics and introduction of the place, and it was great that he also introduced local restaurants and Kumamoto's unique specialties that shouldn't be missed! Most importantly, he used language freely, making it a truly comfortable trip without any inconvenience. Thank you!

Our tour guide, Ada, was absolutely wonderful and incredibly thoughtful. The day before the tour, she sent an email with helpful tips and clear pictures showing the subway meeting point. Today's Takachiho Gorge tour was fantastic, the weather was perfect, and everyone was on time. Ada also thoughtfully explained how to worship at a shrine during the journey. She's very witty and humorous; she even joked that she's the fastest guide in all of Kyushu because she's so good at getting boat tickets! Our family had a truly perfect day. Ada's time management was also excellent. I was initially worried we wouldn't get to try the horse sashimi, but in the end, we perfectly timed it to enjoy the delicacy just before the 3 PM cutoff. I will definitely recommend this day trip to any friends visiting Kyushu! The bus driver was also very kind, and the bus was comfortable and odor-free. Thumbs up! I'm so happy; it left me with unforgettable memories.

It's been a long time since I've joined a group tour; I've always preferred independent travel. This time, I finally got to go boating in the long-desired Takachiho Gorge and saw the lush green Kusasenri. If it weren't for Klook's one-day tour, it would have been impossible to do this without driving myself. Our tour guide, Ms. Wu Xia, worked incredibly hard. This group had tourists from all over the world: Germany, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The guide had to provide explanations and reminders in both Chinese and English, demonstrating great professionalism and patience. Although there was a slight delay due to a group member being late, which was a minor regret, overall, this trip gave me confidence in group tours, even though I'm not used to them. I would consider joining a Klook tour again in the future.

Since Mount Aso was closed, our guide, Lily, was very adaptable and quickly adjusted the itinerary with alternative attractions, ensuring a smooth transition between stops. Lily is very knowledgeable, providing introductions to local culture and history along the way. She was patient and friendly, and her timely reminders for meeting times meant no one felt rushed. The scenery at Takachiho Gorge was absolutely stunning, and the boat ride was a truly therapeutic experience. We had a very fulfilling day. Our tour guide for this trip is Xiao Wang, from Harbin. Along the way, he'll share stories and knowledge about various attractions, and he's very enthusiastic! We were quite lucky this time; a few days ago, I saw online that when it rained, it was completely foggy and you couldn't see anything, which made me a bit worried. Today (6/5) is sunny and bright. Our first stop was Kusasenri, where we had lunch and took photos, avoiding the main crowds, before heading to the shrine, and finally to Takachiho. It was a shame that we couldn't go boating due to the high water levels from the recent rain, and in the afternoon, a light rain meant we couldn't see the beautiful blue river from the online pictures. However, the overall itinerary was still quite reasonable. The trip is heavily dependent on the weather, and there are quite a few slopes to climb, so I recommend checking the weather forecast after booking your tour.
