On July 26th, we were fortunate to join a day tour led by guide Sun Peng. His explanations were incredibly lively and engaging, providing detailed insights into Kumamoto's culture and history, which we found very enriching! He also thoughtfully shared must-buy souvenirs and a food map. The itinerary was well-planned, making our day very enjoyable! The rare boat experience at Takachiho Gorge offered beautiful scenery and was definitely worth experiencing firsthand! The vast Kusasenri, with distant views of Mount Aso, presented breathtaking landscapes. Enjoying the milk soft-serve ice cream recommended by our guide was truly a delight. The Aso latte was also delicious! The Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine was very unique, feeling like we had stepped into a mysterious, otherworldly realm. It's a shame our time there was limited; if we could have stayed longer to soak in the atmosphere, it would have been even better! All in all, we absolutely loved today's day tour!

The Takachiho Gorge boat ride was simply breathtaking. Being able to paddle through the crystal-clear waters surrounded by towering cliffs and the beautiful Manai Falls was an unforgettable experience. The Amaterasu Railway add-on was equally impressive, offering stunning panoramic views and a unique experience crossing the high railway bridge. What made this tour truly special was our guide, Kong Yan. As a solo traveller, I was initially worried about the boat ride, but Kong Yan kindly offered to ride the boat with me. Her thoughtfulness and willingness to go the extra mile made me feel welcomed and included. Throughout the tour, she was friendly, attentive, professional, and always ready to help. Her enthusiasm and care for the guests greatly enhanced the overall experience. The transportation was comfortable, the schedule was well managed, and every part of the tour ran smoothly. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Kyushu.

Today's guided day trip to Takachiho Gorge, Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine, and Aso-san Kusasenri was truly a healing journey through nature and legend. In the early morning, Takachiho Gorge was enveloped in a light mist. As we boated through the columnar joint cliffs carved by volcanic eruptions, we looked up to see a sliver of sky and down at the emerald-blue stream, feeling as if we had stumbled into a secret realm left behind by the gods. In the afternoon, we boarded the pink sightseeing train. The semi-open carriages carried us through forests and tunnels, and the bubbles blown by the conductor refracted rainbows in the sunlight, perfectly blending childlike wonder and romance. Our next stop, Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine, instantly transported us into the animated world of 'Hotarubi no Mori e.' Nearly a hundred moss-covered stone lanterns lined both sides of the approach, and towering cedar trees blocked out the sky. Every step was taken amidst tranquility and mystery, with sunbeams filtering through the leaves like guides to another world. The end of our itinerary was reserved for Kusasenri on Mount Aso. On the vast grasslands, cattle and horses roamed leisurely, and the outlines of the Aso Five Peaks were clearly visible in the distance under the setting sun. The desolate beauty of the volcanic landscape and the vitality of the grasslands found a wonderful harmony at this moment. The smooth and wonderful experience throughout the trip was thanks to Tour Guide Sun's attentive care. With his humorous and engaging explanations of local customs, Guide Sun's professionalism and meticulousness made the otherwise complex transportation connections incredibly easy. He also shared many local delicacies and souvenirs that only locals would know about. We thank Guide Sun for transforming the day's scenery into the sweetest part of our memories with his warmth and expertise. We look forward to our next trip to Kyushu and hope to meet such a reliable guide again.

We booked this tour quite late, so the only option left was in Chinese. Although we don’t speak the language we still enjoyed the tour a lot! The tour guide, Kong, was nice and friendly. She tried hard to also explain certain things in English to us. The itinerary had just the right amount of things to see for a day trip. As expected, Takachiho gorge was an impressive sight. Next, we did not sign up for the train ride initially. However, later we changed our minds and Kong was kind to still let us onboard (having saved 2 last tickets). I really recommend booking the train ride - it was a highlight for me. Since the volcano was closed today, we went to see the shrine, which was hidden uphill (200 something steps) in the woods. At Kusasenrigahama we had an hour for both lunch and exploring the area. Although a bit tight with time, we still managed to have some food and walk around the grasslands. Overall, the tour was great value for money. Highly recommend!

I originally planned a self-guided trip, but because I couldn't book a boat tour, I unexpectedly discovered this one-day tour, which turned out to be the best memory of this trip. First, I must commend our guide, Sister Kong Yan. Not only did she explain all the details very clearly, but she also shared many interesting facts along the way. Even with a hoarse voice, she enthusiastically provided explanations, making the entire journey incredibly enriching. She even introduced us to a lovely vendor at the end, and we truly had a wonderful time! Additionally, our driver, Mr. Mako, was excellent. The mountain roads were challenging, but I felt completely safe and comfortable throughout the entire ride. We all had a great time and returned home safely, for which I am truly grateful! Regarding the itinerary, I have two suggestions that might enhance the experience, and I'd like to share them with you. First, because the Kumamoto mountainous area is vast and the attractions are spread out, planning transportation time can be difficult. Perhaps you could consider reducing one activity to allow for a more profound impression at each stop. For example, if the Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine were removed, there would be more leisurely time at Kusasenri and Takachiho Gorge. However, I can also imagine that some people prefer to visit more places and feel that a packed itinerary is more fulfilling. In that case, perhaps there could be an opportunity in the future to offer a slightly more in-depth tour. My second suggestion is that if this tour could be extended by an hour, it might provide an even more profound experience while retaining the current itinerary. We gathered at Kumamoto Station at 9:00 AM and boarded the tour bus. Our guide, Mr. Kong, provided a very detailed introduction to Kumamoto, the history of Kumamoto Castle, local cuisine, and many aspects of Japanese culture. He also shared tips on how to make the most wonderful memories, building anticipation for the entire trip right from the start. The first stop was Kusasenri (approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes), arriving around 10:40 AM. Here, you could choose to walk across the grasslands, ride horses, take photos, have lunch, or buy souvenirs—there was plenty to do! The weather was beautiful today, with a clear blue sky, lush green grasslands, and a pleasant breeze. The scenery was truly therapeutic. Originally, the second stop was Mount Aso, but due to the volcano being closed, we went to Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine instead (approximately 30 minutes). The shrine required climbing about 220 steps. We took photos and rested along the way, reaching the top in about ten minutes. The forest scenery along the path was very serene, verdant, and cool, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of an animated film. At the very top was a small, unmanned shrine where you could self-serve for amulets by depositing money. Shrine seals (Goshuin) could be purchased at a small shop in the parking lot. Mr. Kong also mentioned that this shrine is ideal for praying for good relationships and romantic connections. The third stop was the Takachiho Gorge Railway (approximately 40-50 minutes). Everyone boarded the sightseeing train together. The seating was a bit cramped, but the overall atmosphere was joyful. The train stopped at its highest point, allowing everyone to stand up, admire the scenery, and take photos of the entire forest and village houses. The conductor even used a bubble machine to enhance the atmosphere and sang interactively, which was truly charming and thoughtful. Although some views along the way were not as expansive as imagined, the overall experience was very heartwarming. The final stop was the Takachiho Gorge boat ride (approximately 1 and a half hours). After getting off at the third parking lot, we walked and took photos for about 30 minutes to reach the boating area. We were very lucky and got on a boat with almost no waiting. Rowing in the cool gorge and admiring the waterfalls up close was truly special and offered great photo opportunities. Afterward, we could take a shuttle bus or taxi back to the third parking lot. Near the parking lot, there was a small shop selling grilled horse meat skewers and oden. The atmosphere was very relaxed as everyone chatted and rested nearby. The grilled horse meat skewers were very fragrant, and the oden's meat was incredibly tender with a slightly sweet broth, somewhat like beef stew—it was delicious! Aside from the scenery, the most memorable aspect of the entire trip was Mr. Kong's enthusiasm and attentiveness. Before each stop, he would remind everyone what to pay attention to, when to use the restroom, and to eat beforehand. He also recommended souvenirs, genuinely showing his desire for everyone to have a good time. Our driver, Mr. Mako, was also very professional, driving smoothly. He would even slow down slightly when passing beautiful scenery, allowing everyone to take photos. Each time we got on and off the bus, he kindly wished us a pleasant journey. The only minor drawback of this trip was that the time spent at each attraction was not very long, making it feel a bit like a whirlwind tour. However, for a non-self-driving day trip, being able to experience so many unique attractions in Kumamoto and Takachiho was incredibly fulfilling and well worth participating in!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had an amazing Takachiho day trip with our tour guide, Sun Peng! He was fluent in Mandarin, extremely friendly, and very knowledgeable throughout the journey. From recommending fantastic local restaurants to sharing what to do (and what not to do), every part of the trip was smooth and enjoyable. Sun Peng also helped us secure tickets for the Takachiho Railway and the boat ride at Takachiho Gorge for an additional fee, which was greatly appreciated as these tickets are extremely difficult to obtain. What impressed us most was his deep knowledge of Kumamoto’s history and culture, which made the experience much more meaningful and memorable. He also made sure everyone was comfortable and having fun during the trip. 10/10 would highly recommend Sun Peng to anyone visiting Takachiho and Kumamoto. Thank you for making our trip such a wonderful experience.

This time, I took my family and several aunts on a day trip to Takachiho, Kyushu (departing from Kumamoto), and the overall experience was very satisfying. Our guide today, Kong Yan, was incredibly attentive. She not only provided detailed introductions to the local attractions and historical anecdotes but also shared many local culinary delights, making the trip even richer and more enjoyable. Although it was a bit rainy, we could still see the spectacular, barren volcanic landscape at Kusasenri, and the Aso milk we drank was incredibly delicious, offering a unique flavor. At the secluded Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine, we felt a sense of tranquility and abundant energy, which was very impressive. Next, we boarded the Takachiho Railway, and its 360-degree open design allowed us to take in the scenery along the way without obstruction, making it a truly worthwhile experience. Finally, we arrived at Takachiho Gorge, where we admired the magnificent landscape sculpted by nature, bringing a perfect end to our day. Additionally, we tried the horse meat skewers and stew recommended by our guide, and they were surprisingly delicious. We are very grateful for the hard work and professionalism of our guide and driver, which created wonderful memories for this trip.

Our tour guide was absolutely perfect! Not only were they incredibly attentive, reminding us of important details along the way and explaining Japanese history and culture, but they were also very thoughtful. They helped us take many beautiful photos and introduced us to lots of delicious food! I highly recommend boating at Takachiho Gorge – it was so much fun! Although it requires some physical effort, I think it's definitely worth it. Afterward, we took a scenic train ride, and the cherry blossoms along the way were stunning. I was surprised to see Miyazaki's cherry blossoms already in full bloom at the end of March. We had one small regret: we couldn't visit the volcano because it was closed that day. However, our guide was wonderful and added an alternative stop for us, taking us to Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine. This is the setting for the 'Hotarubi no Mori e' anime, and after climbing over 200 steps, we were met with breathtaking scenery that felt truly purifying. Our final stop was Kusasenri. Even at the end of March, the golden landscape was beautiful. I highly recommend the Akagyu (red beef) rice bowl at Restaurant No. 4 in Kusasenri; you grill it yourself, and it's incredibly fragrant! To top it all off, our guide even bought us small gifts, bringing our perfect day to a wonderful close.
