What to expect

⚠️Every third Thursday of the month, due to the closure of the Takachiho Railway, the itinerary will be changed to Takachiho Gorge + Takachiho Boat Ride + Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine + Kusasenri + Mount Aso Volcano Square. (Takachiho Railway will operate normally on August 20, 2026) First Stop: Takachiho Gorge Boat Ride Drift in a small boat between the strange rock cliffs on both banks, looking up at the Manai Falls cascading from above, with the waterfall splashing directly into the clear stream. Note⚠️: The Takachiho boat ride project is for groups of 2-3 people sharing one boat. Solo travelers will share a boat with other group members. In case of force majeure, if the boat ride is canceled, a refund of 2000 JPY per person will be issued. Second Stop: Takachiho Railway Board the nostalgic sightseeing train, traveling on the old railway bridge, passing through tunnels and viaducts, overlooking the magnificent Takachiho Gorge. Third Stop: Kusasenri Endless grasslands stretch at the foot of Mount Aso, with blue skies, white clouds, and green grass reflecting each other. The scene of cows and horses leisurely grazing is picturesque and refreshing. Fourth Stop: Mount Aso Crater Visit one of the world’s still-active volcanoes, observing the churning volcanic smoke and the massive crater up close. The awe-inspiring scene of this primal power of the Earth is definitely worth experiencing at least once in a lifetime. If the volcano is closed, we will go to Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine instead. Special Itinerary: Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine (Limited Route) From December 1st to February 28th, visit Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine, a mysterious shrine known as the “entrance to another world.” Stone steps are covered with moss on both sides, and the approach to the shrine is filled with a tranquil atmosphere, like a hidden realm穿越时空. The cinematic scenery is an excellent spot for photography and check-ins. ⚠️The round trip to Takachiho Gorge requires 20-30 minutes of walking. Please wear comfortable shoes. This tour is not suitable for those with mobility issues. Thank you. Due to potential issues with purchasing Takachiho boat tickets online, even if you have purchased a package including tickets, we will do our best to buy them for you. If we are unable to purchase them, we will notify you via email at least 4 days in advance. Thank you for your understanding! ⚠️ Travel Reminder | August 8th – August 16th is Japan’s Obon holiday travel peak season, which may lead to traffic congestion, large crowds, attractions closing early, or itinerary time adjustments. Please do not book dinner, flights, or Shinkansen on the same day, and it is recommended to bring a power bank. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Takachiho Gorge, beautiful and highly recommended. Capture the silky texture of the water flow near Manai Falls using a slow shutter speed, or along the gorge trail, catch the dappled light of the sun filtering through the leaves.

The basalt columns of Takachiho Gorge are very distinctive, standing upright as if cut with a knife. I recommend a low-angle composition, contrasting the rock walls with the sky overhead, to showcase the gorge's towering height and dramatic impact.

Review for: Kumamoto Classic Route | Boat Tour Experience

On July 26th, we were fortunate to join a day tour led by guide Sun Peng. His explanations were incredibly lively and engaging, providing detailed insights into Kumamoto's culture and history, which we found very enriching! He also thoughtfully shared must-buy souvenirs and a food map. The itinerary was well-planned, making our day very enjoyable! The rare boat experience at Takachiho Gorge offered beautiful scenery and was definitely worth experiencing firsthand! The vast Kusasenri, with distant views of Mount Aso, presented breathtaking landscapes. Enjoying the milk soft-serve ice cream recommended by our guide was truly a delight. The Aso latte was also delicious! The Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine was very unique, feeling like we had stepped into a mysterious, otherworldly realm. It's a shame our time there was limited; if we could have stayed longer to soak in the atmosphere, it would have been even better! All in all, we absolutely loved today's day tour!

#First time joining a group tour in Japan, and it was a fantastic experience! Our guide was incredibly dedicated, explaining Japanese culture throughout the trip and even clarifying the design intent behind Kumamon, which helped us remember things quickly. The guide was also very thoughtful, taking photos for us before we went boating, creating wonderful memories. We felt the day's itinerary was very fulfilling. Despite the hot weather, we were tired but happy, having visited most of Kumamoto's most iconic spots. Although time was limited, we were very satisfied! We hope to join a different tour route next time! The Aso cuisine recommended by the guide was truly delicious, though we couldn't take any home... Thank you!

Even though it said the tour guide only spoke Chinese, he was perfectly fine speaking both Japanese and English. I'm Vietnamese and only speak Japanese, so I received a lot of support. He arranged for me to sit in the front row and checked in with me constantly, as I was the only foreigner on the bus ☺️. If anyone wants to go, don't hesitate to book! 👍👍

Our driver, Mr. Ueda, drove steadily, comfortably, and on time, and our tour guide, Kong Yan, was enthusiastic, polite, and provided excellent service. Our first stop, Kusasenri, turned into a foggy landscape, but the yogurt coffee and ice cream were delicious. The second stop was Kamishikimi Kumanoza Shrine; due to the cloudy weather, the entire atmosphere was very similar to what we saw online, and I loved the towering trees there. For lunch, we ordered sandwiches and burgers recommended by our guide, and both tasted great, especially the meat. The third stop was a ride on a small train, which was very sunny and hot, and the driver enthusi enthusiastically explained things throughout the journey. Although I didn't understand everything, I felt the driver's passion. The last stop was Takachiho Gorge, where we took a pleasant walk, and the environment was beautiful. Before leaving, we enjoyed a skewer of grilled horse meat and a mango shaved ice, making for a perfect trip.

I do not speak Mandarin Chinese, only English. but the guide Kong was so helpful and she is friendly. she tries her best. I recommend the tour. there was not any other English tour I could find so I came here. It was amazing. we were unfortunately unable to ride the train as it was storming and with the rain, no one could ride the boat + cannot go on the mount aso as it is closed. despite this, it was a really good experience in the end. I highly recommend it.

I wanted to go on a tour to Takachiho, and even though I'm Korean, the reason I chose this place was because the itinerary was excellent! Tours available in Korean required a minimum of 4 people and were quite expensive, but here, they put together exactly the places I wanted to visit at a reasonable price, so there was no reason not to choose them. Especially, even though our guide, KONG, seemed to be feeling unwell with a cold, he provided detailed explanations to each and every one of us and was incredibly kind. Despite it being a Chinese-language tour, I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. Also, he explained necessary parts in English, so there's absolutely no need to worry about being left behind, haha. If you're looking to tour Aso and Takachiho, I think you can choose this without any worries! It was a fun and fulfilling trip :^) P.S. If you like Indian curry, try the Indian curry restaurant for lunch, haha. The garlic naan comes with a sprinkle of chili and it's absolutely delicious. Even level 5 spice isn't spicy at all, haha. And definitely try the ice cream at the ice cream shop!

Kumamoto Takachiho Gorge Day Trip 👉 A chance encounter with a treasure of a tour guide ☆👍 Knowledgeable about the scenery, full of stories, witty, and warm-hearted ✌️ Laughter and kindness all the way ♡❤️ This short trip was incredibly worthwhile! Listening to local stories and admiring the beautiful scenery before us. A short day, but the views were captivating, and joy filled our hearts~ The scenery is always along the way, but it's often the people and events encountered during the journey that are the most moving and touching... I would give it 5 stars for all categories except it was raining all day with thick fog covering mount Aso and the crater pools as well as masking the stunning beauty of Takachiho Gorge as well as no boat ride becos of the weather. otherwise I had the best red beef lunch and milk ice cream. Special mention of our guide J78 小玉who was very informative enthusiastic and conducted the tour very well, she also gave excellent lunch and souvenir recommendations she deserves⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

Today's itinerary was packed, and it felt wonderful. First, there was the mini-train, which the kids are sure to love; the driver even blows bubbles at the end! Then, the canyon was beautiful and very photogenic; I really enjoyed the scenery as we strolled along. My personal favorite was the Kumano Shrine; it had a very, very serene atmosphere, with ancient moss-covered lanterns and towering old trees looking down on everything. It started raining at our last stop, so we ate Kuroge Wagyu barbecue on the second floor of Kusasenri, looking out at the lush green landscape. All my senses were delighted. Many thanks to our guide today, Mr. Miyamoto, who was very attentive and thoughtful. Not only did he give us a perfect day, but he also gave us posters on the way back, and I got my favorite, "Spirited Away"! I'm so happy.
