What to expect
Host Introduction
Hello everyone, I am Woyun Xuanzhu, your host from Beijing. Since childhood, I have been immersed in Beijing's traditional culture, loving poetry, calligraphy, and traditional Chinese painting. Among these, I am particularly fond of traditional Chinese painting, especially bird-and-flower painting. I have had the privilege of receiving personal guidance from masters such as Xu Zhan, Liu Cunhui, and Guo Shifu. For decades, I have diligently practiced calligraphy and painting, drawing inspiration from nature and my inner self. My works are widely acclaimed in the freehand bird-and-flower painting field and have been collected by buyers from many countries, including the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Russia. Currently, I have my own studio, Woyun Xuan, located outside the Donghua Gate of the Forbidden City in Beijing, dedicated to promoting cultural exchange and heritage between China and other countries.
Experience Introduction
There’s an old Beijing folk rhyme that goes, “A fan has wind, held in hand; if someone asks to borrow it, wait until winter’s stand.” In the scorching summer, painting a small scene or writing a few words on a fan, and then using it to fan a cool breeze, instantly dispels worries. The ink and brushwork dilute some of life’s trivialities, and the painting adds a certain strength. It can be called a cool friend, and even more so, a good friend. During your leisure time, come to my studio, and I will share with you the traditional Beijing art of painting fan surfaces. Then, you will personally paint a fan. With a cup of fragrant tea, calm and composed, time will linger here. Whether slow or fast, maintaining a good mindset is key.
Venue Introduction
The venue is located outside the Donghua Gate of the Forbidden City, with convenient transportation. The studio is adorned with antique furniture, creating a rich atmosphere for calligraphy and painting.
Experience Process
Starts at 14:00 in the afternoon (other times can be negotiated); I will first introduce the origin of the traditional art of painting fan surfaces and some calligraphy and painting works; Then I will demonstrate how to paint on a fan; Next, you can complete a fan surface yourself under guidance.

Reviews
The location is convenient coz it’s so close to the Forbidden City East gate. This was by far one of the most fun experiences we had as a family in Beijing. They offered us tea and traditional Beijing biscuits when we first arrived, which was very nice of the host. For those contemplating between traditional calligraphy or fan painting, fan painting gets my vote. My daughter loves it! We did both and if you’re a foreigner then you might enjoy fan painting more. The master was very patient in guiding us as we practice drawing fish and panda before finally drawing our masterpieces on our fans. We highly recommend this acitivity with this vendor if you are visiting Beijing!
We went to study. We had a good experience. And the children had a lot of fun. Good service staff The place is not difficult to find, on the side of the road, near Forbiddin city.
Highly recommended. this was way better than expectation. the kids got to visit a local beijing home and the hosts were very hospitable and friendly as well, they kept offering us local drinks and snacks. most importantly the kids were highly engaged in the Chinese panting and the host was very patient and willing to teach and explain to them.
