What to expect
The Lin Family Garden of Wufeng, also known as Yi Pu, was initially built in 1906 and completed in 1914. This Japanese-Western architectural complex, constructed during the Japanese occupation period, represents the final piece of the Lin family's historical architectural ensemble and has stood for over a century. Originally, it served as a playground for Mr. Lin Chi-tang (1874-1922). The front yard housed granaries and accounting rooms, while the backyard featured a zoo with exotic animals purchased from Tokyo. It was a must-visit attraction for Japanese tourists visiting Taichung at the time. Yi Pu also served as a Western-style garden where Mr. Lin Hsien-tang hosted the Yi Hsin Society and tea parties.
In 1951, Mr. Lin Ho-nien (1914-1994), the first popularly elected Magistrate of Taichung County and the fourth son of Mr. Lin Chi-tang, converted it into a county government advisory reception center, marking the origin of the Red Faction in Taichung politics.
Today, the owner of Yi Pu, Lin Chen-ting (1953~), a descendant of Mr. Lin Lie-tang (1876~1947), is passionate about and dedicated to promoting art and humanities. In addition to collecting and exhibiting works by renowned artists, he frequently collaborates with emerging artists for exhibitions. The Yi Pu Garden and Yi Pu Art Museum serve as excellent venues for these exhibitions. While preserving historical sites and cultural relics, they also incorporate a greater sense of artistry, injecting new vitality into this ancient settlement.
