Kanheri Caves Half Day Tour from Mumbai
What to expect
The Kanheri Caves are a spectacle that no history or cultural aficionado should miss when in Mumbai. An English or Chinese speaking guide will pick you up from your hotels and take you to these incredible structures, both man made and natural at the same time. You'll first drive by the Sanjay Gandhi National Park's forest, heading deep into it in order to reach the Kanheri Caves themselves. These caves are rock-cut monuments, with over a hundred of them within the temple complex. The caves have been built over time, and therefore hold a trove of clues from the culture of India over the centuries. With your guide's help, you'll learn how most of these caves were viharas in Buddhism. Devotees lived, studied and meditated in these unadorned halls and chambers, particularly Buddhist monks. You'll visit the Stupa within the caves, where you'll behold a congregation hall and its immense stone pillars. Once you've finished your exploration, you'll head out to a local restaurant for lunch before you're dropped off back to your hotel.
