Reviews
We had a fantastic time with Chiu at the markets. She had wonderful recommendations and even got us access to smaller portions so we could try everything. Aside from the food, we were also given a rundown of the temple and recommendations for the rest of our trip in Taiwan. Would definitely recommend Chiu for anyone’s first time in Taiwan!
Our tour guide was Mr. Zhuang Deming, who is fluent in Japanese. He graduated from Waseda University, joined JAL, worked at Narita for 10 years, and then returned to Taiwan where he worked until retirement. He has lived near Shilin for a long time and now works as a tour guide as his life's passion. We were extremely satisfied with his guidance, which included not only a tour of Shilin Night Market but also in-depth discussions about the history of Taiwan and its relationship with Japan. Despite the unfortunate rainy weather, our food tour was perfect, featuring local specialties like the famous large fried chicken cutlet (Dajipai), the recently popular grilled king oyster mushrooms, herbal tea, and finally, Mr. Zhuang's highly recommended pan-fried soup dumplings (Shengjianbao). Japanese visitors who want to experience Shilin Night Market more deeply should definitely request Mr. Zhuang as their guide.
We had Joseph as our guide for the market tour and he was really good. Very attentive and helpful and we were lucky enough to have him all to ourselves so it was like a private tour. He shows you all parts of the market, not just the food necessarily. Joseph answered all our questions and we got to learn more about what the locals eat - both young and old which was very interesting. We are happy that we did this on our first night (& a week night so it wasn't too busy) so that we can use our new-found knowledge for the rest of our trip.
I was toured by Joseph, and all I can say is he's the best - knowledge on food, histrory of the place, and well-spoken. I really enjoyed my food trip here at Shilin Night Market.
As a fussy eater I finished full and satisfied We don’t eat sea food or offal, so it was daunting hunting for street food by ourselves. Our guide Vicky was fabulous. At the meeting point she gave us a bag of sweet potato balls, a great starter to begin our tour. Vicky gave a brief history of the market area at the beginning and planned an itinerary based on our dietary requirements. As we walked, she added stories and facts about the food and people. We toured a temple and learnt more about Chinese customs. We ate many Taiwanese specialties and even when we were full Vicki pointed out stalls we may like to try on another day. All her recommendations were good, and the food was extremely affordable. We highly recommend Vicky and this tour.
Vicky was an excellent guide who showed us a variety of food options. the tour went overtime but she was not rushed to leave. her command of English was excellent. personal favourite was the fried pork bun.
Went to Shilin DIY in 2019. Returned this year and took this tour. It's very helpful when you're trying to decide which of Taiwan's famous food you want to try but without the benefit of a local's knowledge. Tried their Fried Milk, Oyster Omelette, Stinky Tofu, Fried Chicken and a Sesame Riceball. Expenses are for your own account except for the free milk tea. Tour guide Jeannie was fun and friendly.
Rebecca was a great guide and showed me around the market so I can choose what I wanted to try. She also took me to a temple and I really liked the area, it feels more local and the food was very delicious. Thank you Rebecca 😊
