We loved the Ryokan experience, staffs were excellent with services, foods were delicious! My husband and I were satisfied with the experience even though it’s pricey, totally worth it!

My wife and I splurged for a single night at Tsubaki Ryoukan during our Japan holiday, and we loved it. We took a taxi from Atami which cost us around $50aud, but there are buses that go up to the hotel as well. The building and it's rooms are very traditional, and upon arriving we were given some freshly brewed matcha while watching the koi swim around the pond in the garden atrium. Our room overlooked a small garden too, which was lit up beautifully at night. Unfortunately we were a little too early to see the maple leaves turn fully red, but I can only imagine how beautiful it must look when they do. The onsen itself was dreamy, and we must have taken at least 6 baths in the single night we spent there! The included kaiseki meal was wonderful, but ended up being too much food than we could comfortably eat all at once! Regardless, it was all delicious and our housekeeper was so sweet and patient with us, despite my poor Japanese skills. My wife and I are both heavily tattooed so could not make use of the main public bath, but we knew that going in, and took full advantage of the private bath in our room instead. If you are looking for a more retro luxury ryoukan experience I would highly recommend Tsubaki!

The staff is very nice but the property is old, cramped and humid. A strong smell of mold in the room prevents from a good night sleep. To be avoided

Exceptional traditional ryokan if you want to relax in Hakone & Yugawara! The thoughtfulness and service of the staff was wonderful in every aspect. Rooms were supplied with traditional robes, comfortable sleepwear, onsen on our terrace and hot spring baths. Kaiseki cuisine was delicious, plentiful and presentation was over the top. This is a beautiful facility with an excellent staff. If you want to experience Japanese culture at its finest you need to come here. Our 4 day visit was perfect and worth every penny. We will be back!

We stayed at Tsubaki twice before in the last 15 years. The ryokan has several areas feeling dated but what made up for it was the best kaiseki dinner served. Food was amongst the best in all the famous ryokans we have stayed before in Japan.

It was an amazing experience to stay at the Tsubaki. Staff were very welcoming and nice. They spoke enough english to accommodate all your needs. Food was very good, wifi was fast, and the Onsen is amazing. We stay at a room with private outdoor Onsen and that was top notch. Highly recommend this place if a quite retreat is what you are looking for. The only downside is the fact that this place isn't in Hakone, and the transportation to Hakone could be a bit difficult.

We had an amazing experience and couldn't be happier with the experience. The staff were amazing and the location and the rooms were so perfect. We had amazing food and we had a private onsen as well as access to the public onsen. We had shiatsu massages that were great and very reasonably priced. We had misplace a JR rail pass and the staff went to great efforts in getting it back to us after they discovered it. Great cultural experience and a wonderful stay.

The staff were wonderful but the hotel itself is very run down and if you’re not used to this type of experience you will be surprised that there is almost no where to sit in your room, yet really nowhere else to go. All of the furniture and furnishings are very run down, the carpets are stained etc. I would not complain but for the very expensive price tag of over $800 US. I was extremely disappointed in the quality of the hotel. In addition, the food had been prepared previously and refrigerated and was nothing to get excited about.
