Fantastic 5.0
It was a choppy ride with gale warning and high chance of sea sickness. Thankful that the ride proceeded and we got to see marama and tiaki whales and a school of dusky dolphins and fur seals

Fantastic 5.0
Our driver and guide, Joseph, was very professional and responsible, and even took us to explore some extra views. We were so lucky to have clear weather today and saw sperm whales, dolphins, and seals!

Great 4.0
The whale watching activity was canceled due to bad weather, but the tour guide seemed inexperienced and unable to arrange and execute a backup plan in a timely manner. When we stopped along the way, they also didn't announce the meeting time. Luckily, the group members were quite good and didn't cause any delays. The guide did provide some brief commentary along the way, and there was someone in our group who didn't understand Chinese, but the guide hardly used English to accommodate them.

Fantastic 5.0
Our tour guide was incredibly enthusiastic, taking us to Tongue Point, a spot very close to the sea lions. The itinerary was well-planned, and even though the road conditions weren't the smoothest, we felt completely at ease with our guide. You definitely shouldn't miss this!

What to know before visiting Kaikoura

Best things to do in Kaikoura through the year

Kaikoura is best known for outdoor & sports activities and guided tours, with outdoor adventures leading local bookings and tours a close second. Demand rises toward November and dips around September, so the busiest part of the year concentrates on late spring into early summer.

Activities matched to different traveller types

Families will find tours especially accessible — they offer the widest range of options and simpler ways to join organised trips. Couples often prefer outdoor and sports activities for shared, scenic experiences and nature-focused outings. Solo travellers and small groups can choose between budget-friendly tours and slightly pricier outdoor activities depending on how adventurous they want to get.

What travellers from Hong Kong tend to book ahead

Most travellers from Hong Kong book with planning in mind: typical bookings sit around a month out, while the earliest planners reserve nearer two months ahead. Booking ahead matters most in the November peak, when availability tightens and early reservations are more common.

How categories compare on price and who they suit

Tours are the easiest way in and present the widest spread of options, ranging from entry-level to mid-range choices that suit families and budget-conscious visitors. Outdoor & sports activities sit a touch higher in price on average and tend to appeal to travellers seeking active, nature-led experiences. Together the two categories cover most needs: tours for variety and convenience, outdoor activities for premium, adventure-oriented days out.
