A Master Selection of Sichuan Opera Excerpts|Chongqing Chuanju Theatre|Show Introduction

The “Queen of Sichuan Opera” leads a team of top performers to present the best of the genre
Renowned performers from the Chongqing Chuanju Theatre bring a quartet of distinctive Sichuan opera (aka chuanju) excerpts, showcasing the enduring charm of this ancient art form as well as the charisma and technique of the artists dedicated to bringing it into the new era.
With a history spanning over six decades, the Chongqing Chuanju Theatre has stayed committed to the preservation and innovation of Sichuan opera. The troupe is led by three-time Plum Blossom Award winner Shen Tiemei, a legendary xiqu artist who has been a key contributor in the modern development of Sichuan opera, particularly in the area of singing style innovation.
There are five major singing styles in Sichuan opera, with gaoqiang (the high-pitched style) being the most representative of the genre. This master selection of excerpts provides a great opportunity for the audience to enjoy and compare the variety of singing styles and their respective idiosyncrasies.
Sichuan opera is long beloved for its dramatic plots, witty dialogue, sharp banter and vivid, three-dimensional characters. These classic characteristics, combined with the creative spirit and mesmerising performances brought by the Chongqing Chuanju Theatre, promise to deliver a unique and eye-opening xiqu experience to the audience.
Alongside A Master Selection of Sichuan Opera Excerpts, Chongqing Chuanju Theatre also performs Li Yaxian, a new adaptation of a classic tale starring Shen Tiemei and Wang Chao, together with Sichuan Opera Theatre of Chengdu.
