Li Yaxian｜Chongqing Chuanju Theatre｜Show Introduction
A new adaptation of a classic tale starring acclaimed Sichuan opera star and three-time Plum Blossom Award winner Shen Tiemei
Widely known as China’s La Traviata, Li Yaxian is adapted from a Ming dynasty folktale about the tragic romance between courtesan Li Yaxian and scholar Zheng Yuanhe. In this full-length production, Sichuan opera star Shen Tiemei plays opposite fellow Plum Blossom Award winner Wang Chao, reinterpreting the classic tale with a modern twist and portraying Li Yaxian as a working-class woman fighting for the love of her life. The production also features artists from Chongqing Chuanju Theatre and Sichuan Opera Theatre of Chengdu.
Told over five acts, the performance follows the star-crossed lovers as family disapproval threatens to pull them apart and Li remains steadfast in the face of hardship and heartbreak.
Alongside Li Yaxian, Chongqing Chuanju Theatre performs A Master Selection of Sichuan Opera Excerpts, also featuring Shen Tiemei and other accomplished artists.
