We had the absolute pleasure of having Siman as our driver for the Mount Batur Sunrise Jeep Tour, and he truly made the entire experience unforgettable. From start to finish, Siman took such great care of us ,always patient, kind, and incredibly humble. He made sure we were comfortable and safe throughout the journey, and his warm personality made us feel right at home. One of the highlights was definitely at Paper Hills, where he helped us take the most amazing photos , capturing memories we’ll treasure forever. Siman went above and beyond in every way, and we’re so grateful for his hospitality and genuine care. If you’re lucky enough to have him as your guide, you’re in for an exceptional experience. Highly recommended! He drove us to and fro safely with great responsibility!

If I had to pick the most memorable moment of this Bali trip, I would say the jeep tour without hesitation. This short but intense journey, which started at 3 a.m. and ended around 9 a.m., was not just a simple tour, but a movie. When I got on the jeep to see the stars in the night sky, the road was quiet, and it felt like the whole world was asleep. The starlight I saw while driving through the mountains without a single light was so enchanting that it was hard to describe in words. The moment I looked up at the night sky, I realized that I was really in Bali, and that in itself was thrilling. After seeing the stars, I arrived at the sunrise point, where I could see the dawn sky gradually turning red and brightening. I climbed on top of the jeep and took a picture, and it was really… my favorite picture I’ve ever taken. The background, the light, and my expression were all perfectly captured in the picture. I especially want to thank the photographer, Ngurah. He was so good at framing and timing the picture, and he guided me to pose naturally without making me feel awkward, so the results were amazing. This is a life shot that I want to brag about to my friends 📸 The driver ADI was also very kind. He drove steadily even on rough roads, and he explained where we were going well from time to time, so it wasn't boring at all. He even made small jokes during the tour, which made the long journey feel much more comfortable and warm. After the sunrise, we had another photo shoot with the clear blue morning sky and mountain ridges in the background. I was so happy to be able to capture the scenery with my eyes, make memories with my heart, and take pictures with my camera in that atmosphere where the cold morning air and warm sunlight coexisted. Of course, I was physically quite tired because I had to wake up at 3 in the morning, but I thought that this was an experience I would never forget. The experience of going through the darkness to see something, and the touching scenery and people waiting at the end. This is a special moment that can only be found in Bali. You should definitely do it 😚

A Guide to Mount Batur: Trekking Bali's Iconic Volcano

Traveling to Mount Batur in Bali is one of the island's most unforgettable experiences, especially for those who love adventure and nature. This active volcano, standing 1,717 meters above sea level, is most famous for its sunrise trek, where hikers begin in the early hours of the morning to reach the summit just as the first light breaks over the horizon. The climb, though moderately challenging, rewards visitors with panoramic views of Mount Agung, Lake Batur, and even glimpses of Lombok on clear days. Along the way, you'll encounter unique volcanic landscapes, steam vents, and black lava fields that showcase the mountain's fiery past. After the trek, many travelers relax in nearby hot springs or explore the traditional villages surrounding Mount Batur Caldera, making a trip to Mount Batur both a cultural and natural highlight of any Bali itinerary.

Mount Batur Eruption History

Over the last 200 years, Mount Batur has erupted more than 25 times, earning its reputation as one of Bali's most active volcanoes. Fortunately, most eruptions have been relatively small and non-explosive, with the last minor eruption occurring in 2000. Since then, the volcano has remained calm, though it is still carefully monitored.

The most devastating eruption took place in 1917, when powerful lava flows destroyed several villages and claimed more than 1,000 lives. Later eruptions have been far less destructive, but they left visible traces across the landscape. Today, visitors can see these remnants in the dramatic black lava fields surrounding the base of the volcano, best explored by jeep tours.

Mount Batur and its surroundings are now protected as part of the Batur UNESCO Global Geopark, which highlights both its geological significance and cultural heritage. Thanks to constant monitoring, trekking and tours are only allowed when conditions are safe, ensuring travelers can enjoy this natural wonder with peace of mind.

Popular Must-Visit Attractions In Mount Batur

The Mount Batur Sunrise Trek & Summit

  • What It Is: The most iconic activity in the region. This is a guided trek up the active volcano in the pre-dawn darkness to witness a spectacular sunrise from the summit at 1,717 meters (5,633 feet).

  • The Experience: Your adventure begins with a very early start, typically around 2-3 AM from your hotel. You'll be driven to the base of the volcano where you'll meet your local guide, who will provide flashlights and a walking stick. The trek itself is moderately challenging and takes about 2 hours, winding up a path of volcanic rock and sand under a canopy of stars. As you reach the summit just before dawn, you'll find a spot to rest while your guide prepares a simple but magical breakfast: eggs and bananas cooked using the natural steam escaping from volcanic vents. As the sun begins to rise, the sky ignites with colour, gradually revealing a breathtaking panoramic vista of the surrounding caldera, the shimmering Lake Batur below, and the majestic Mount Agung and Mount Abang in the distance.

The Active Volcanic Crater

  • What It Is: The crater at the very top of Mount Batur, which you can explore after watching the sunrise.

  • The Experience: Once the sun is up, your guide will lead you on a walk around the rim of the main volcanic crater. You can peer into the vast caldera, see the evidence of past eruptions in the black lava fields, and feel the warmth of the earth beneath your feet as steam hisses from active vents. The area is often home to a troop of playful gray macaque monkeys, who are quite accustomed to visitors and will eagerly await any leftover breakfast. This part of the tour offers incredible photo opportunities and a tangible connection to the raw power of the active volcano.

Batur Natural Hot Springs (Toya Devasya)

  • What It Is: A complex of naturally heated hot spring pools located on the serene shores of Lake Batur.

  • The Experience: This is the perfect way to relax and reward yourself after the strenuous morning trek. Soaking in the warm, mineral-rich water is incredibly soothing for tired muscles. The highlight is the series of infinity pools that are built right on the edge of the lake, allowing you to relax in the hot water while enjoying stunning, unobstructed views of the very volcano you just climbed. It's a therapeutic and incredibly scenic experience.

Lake Batur (Danau Batur)

  • What It Is: Lake Batur, a vast and beautiful crescent-shaped caldera lake situated at the foot of Mount Batur. It is the largest lake in Bali.

  • The Experience: The lake itself is a key part of the region's stunning beauty. While most visitors view it from above (either from the Kintamani ridge or the volcano's summit), you can also explore it at water level. Activities include taking a traditional boat out onto the water, canoeing, or visiting the lakeside temple, Pura Ulun Danu Batur, which was painstakingly relocated from the volcano's slopes after a devastating eruption. The lake adds a serene, blue counterpoint to the rugged black and green of the volcano.

Kintamani Viewpoint (Penelokan)

  • What It Is: The main viewpoint on the crater rim road in the village of Kintamani, offering the classic panoramic view of Mount Batur and Lake Batur without any hiking required.

  • The Experience: For those who prefer not to trek, this is the best way to see the volcano. The main road through Kintamani is lined with numerous restaurants and cafes that have built terraces specifically to capitalize on this jaw-dropping vista. You can enjoy a leisurely buffet lunch or a coffee while taking in the magnificent scenery of the volcano rising from the center of the ancient caldera, with the vast lake stretching out beside it.

Trunyan Village (A Unique Cultural Site)

  • What It Is: An ancient and isolated village on the eastern shore of Lake Batur, inhabited by the Bali Aga people, who are considered the original inhabitants of Bali and retain many pre-Hindu customs.

  • The Experience: A visit to Trunyan is a fascinating, and intense, cultural detour. The village is most famous for its unique open-air burial ritual. Instead of cremation, the deceased are laid to rest in a special cemetery under a massive, ancient, and fragrant tree called the Taru Menyan ("fragrant tree"). It is believed that the tree's powerful scent naturally neutralizes the odour of decomposition. A visit requires a boat trip across the lake and should be undertaken with the utmost respect for the local traditions.

10 Essential Tips for a Perfect Climb

Booking & Preparation (Before You Go)

  1. Book a Guided Tour Package in Advance: This is the most important tip. For safety, it is mandatory to climb Mount Batur with an accredited local guide. The easiest and most hassle-free way to arrange this is by booking an all-inclusive tour package with Klook before you leave. These packages typically include:

    • Hotel pick-up and drop-off (from areas like Ubud, Seminyak, Kuta, etc.).

    • An experienced local guide.

    • Flashlights and walking sticks.

    • Breakfast and coffee/tea at the summit.

    • Often includes an optional stop at a coffee plantation or the Batur Natural Hot Springs.

  2. Choose Your Tour Wisely: Decide if you just want the trek or a combined experience. The most popular combination is the Sunrise Trek + Hot Springs tour, which is highly recommended. Soaking in the warm, mineral-rich pools after the climb is the perfect way to soothe your muscles.

  3. Check the Weather, But Be Prepared for Anything: While August is Bali's dry season and generally offers the best chance for clear skies, mountain weather is unpredictable. Check the forecast before you go, but always be prepared for the possibility of wind, mist, or a brief shower. A clear sunrise is an amazing reward but is never guaranteed.

  4. Get a Good Night's Sleep: This is not a regular morning. Your pick-up time for the sunrise trek will be extremely early, likely between 1:30 AM and 2:30 AM, depending on your hotel's location. Make sure to rest well the day before.

What to Wear & Pack (Essential Gear)

  1. Wear Layers of Clothing: The temperature changes dramatically. It will be cold and windy at the base and especially at the summit before dawn (around 12-15°C). However, you will get very warm during the ascent and on the walk down after sunrise. The best strategy is to layer:

    • Base Layer: A comfortable t-shirt or long-sleeved top.

    • Mid Layer: A warm fleece or hoodie.

    • Outer Layer: A light, windproof, and preferably waterproof jacket.

  2. Wear Proper Footwear: This is crucial for safety. The path is made of uneven volcanic rock, gravel, and sand, and can be slippery. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes with good grip. Hiking shoes are ideal, but a good pair of running shoes or trainers will also work. Do not wear sandals or flip-flops.

  3. Pack a Small Backpack with Essentials.

    • Water: At least 1-1.5 liters per person is essential.

    • Headlamp: While guides provide basic hand-held flashlights, a headlamp is much better as it keeps your hands free for balance.

    • Camera/Phone: To capture the incredible sunrise. Bring a small plastic bag to protect it from potential moisture.

    • Extra Snacks: High-energy snacks like granola bars or nuts are great for a boost.

    • Cash (Indonesian Rupiah): For tipping your guide (a common and appreciated gesture) or buying extra drinks at the summit.

    • Change of Clothes: If you plan to visit the hot springs, pack a swimsuit and a small towel.

During the Trek & Visit (On the Day)

  1. Pace Yourself: The trek is about 2 hours up and is considered moderately difficult. It's not a race. Walk at a steady, comfortable pace and listen to your guide. The path is steep in some sections, but it is manageable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

  2. Be Mindful of the Summit Monkeys: There is a troop of monkeys living at the summit who are very accustomed to people. They are generally harmless but can be mischievous. Keep your backpack closed and secure your belongings, especially food and sunglasses.

  3. Respect the Sacred Site: Mount Batur is a sacred volcano for the Balinese people. Be respectful, follow your guide's instructions, and do not leave any trash behind.
