Wingwing was a very good tour guide! Even if she lost her voice slightly, she did her best to explain to us the stories behind the different sights we visited. The tour itself was well planned and was enough to see the beauty of Busan. Busan was very different compared to Seoul but equally as beautiful. Highly recommended tour!

One of the best experiences I've had in south korea by far. Heeyoung, the chef and the host of the workshop was super nice, and besides her great English, she also taught us so much and really explained all we wanted to know about korean cuisine. She also makes everything from scratch by herself. The food was great and diverse and the place where the workshop took place is clean and really pleasant. After eating, Heeyoung took us to one of the local markets on the area and we got to experience another side fo the Korean cuisine. Overall great experience, I recommend it very much, 10/10

Lucy was a great tour guide! You can see the passion and effort she gives during the whole tour. She is articulate and well equipped with knowledge which I enjoyed. But what I really loved about the whole experience was the food we tried- it was affordable yet very scrumptious. She’s not only a tour guide but also a food connoisseur!!

We visited the main historical sites with our English-speaking tour guide, Ted. He was a great guide who explained everything very well and told us what makes Busan special. Ted was also very patient with us throughout the tour. The lunch was excellent, and the places we saw were wonderful.

The tour guide Sunny is very friendly, the introduction of the attractions is very good, and he will arrange meals and order food. The itinerary time is also very good, but the five six islands are a bit boring. It would be better if more time could be arranged in the white shallow beach and Gancun Cultural Village.

Once a modest settlement for refugees during the Korean War, the village has transformed into one of Busan's most colorful and artistic attractions. From the many viewpoints scattered around the village, you'll enjoy sweeping panoramas of Busan's port and the sea beyond, making it a photographer's dream.

Exploring the village is best done slowly—wander through its labyrinth of stairways, discover hidden artworks, and pop into small galleries, cafés, and souvenir shops run by local residents. For a more structured experience, you can purchase a village map at the information center, which turns your visit into a "stamp tour," guiding you through the most scenic spots and rewarding you with small souvenirs. Whether you visit in the morning to enjoy a quieter atmosphere or in the late afternoon when the golden light enhances the colorful rooftops, Gamcheon offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and creativity. It's a must-visit for travelers seeking both the artistic heart and the local charm of Busan.

Historical Significance of Gamcheon Culture Village

Gamcheon Culture Village was originally built as a settlement for refugees fleeing the Korean War (1950 - 1953), particularly those from the Busan area. Due to the lack of flat land in Busan, the village was built on steep hills. This created it signature terraced layout that you can still see to this day.

For decades after its creation, the village remained underdeveloped, impoverished area with makeshift housing, poor infrastructure and limited resources. In an effort to revitalize the village, the local government and artists launched a public art initiative that transformed the whole village into an open-air museum. Artists and students painted murals, installed sculptures, and created interactive art pieces, giving the village its colorful and creative identity.

As word spread, Gamcheon became a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its unique blend of history, culture, and art. Despite its popularity, Gamcheon remains a living residential area, with ongoing efforts to balance tourism with the daily lives of residents.

Things to Do: The Ultimate Guide to Gamcheon Culture Village

Start Your Adventure with the Stamp Tour Map

This is the best way to begin your exploration and ensure you don't miss the main highlights.

  • The Experience: Head straight to the Haneul Maru Tourist Information Center at the village entrance and purchase the official illustrated map (around 11 HKD). This map not only guides you through the village but also features a "Stamp Tour." As you find key locations and art installations, you collect stamps in your map booklet.

Discover the Iconic Photo Spots

Gamcheon is an Instagrammer's paradise. While the whole village is photogenic, there are a few unmissable spots.

  • The Little Prince and the Desert Fox: This is the most famous photo spot in the entire village. A small, colourful statue of the Little Prince and his fox companion sit on a ledge looking out over the entire village. Be prepared to queue for this iconic shot, but the view is absolutely worth it.

  • The Panoramic Viewpoint: Near the entrance, you'll find a large observation deck that gives you the classic, sweeping view of the entire village—a vibrant kaleidoscope of colourful houses cascading down the hillside to the sea.

  • "The Face of Gamcheon" Mural: Look for a large, colourful mural made of small wooden fish arranged to form a giant face. It represents the community and its connection to the sea.

  • I ♥ GAMCHEON: A colourful sign that's perfect for a classic holiday snap.

Immerse Yourself in the Culture and Fun

Beyond the main photo spots, the real magic is in the activities that let you become part of the scenery.

  • Rent a Retro School Uniform or Hanbok: You'll see many visitors, especially younger ones, exploring the village dressed in colourful traditional Korean hanboks or charming retro-style Korean school uniforms. Numerous shops near the entrance rent these outfits, and it's a fun way to add a playful, nostalgic touch to your photos and experience.

  • Explore the Tiny Art Galleries and Workshops: Tucked away in the alleyways are dozens of small art shops, galleries, and workshops run by local artists. You can browse unique, handmade souvenirs, from painted postcards to ceramic trinkets, that you won't find anywhere else.

  • Relax at a Viewpoint Café: The village is dotted with charming, quirky cafes, many of which have rooftop terraces or large windows offering spectacular views. They are the perfect place to take a break, rest your feet after climbing the steep stairs, and soak in the incredible scenery with a coffee or a refreshing drink.

Essential Tips for Your Visit

  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: This is the most important rule. The village is built on a very steep hill with countless stairs and uneven alleys. Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable.

  • Be a Respectful Visitor: Remember that people still live here. Keep your voice down, especially in the quieter residential alleys, and be mindful not to point your camera directly into people's homes or private property.

  • Allow Enough Time: To do the village justice, plan to spend at least 2 to 3 hours here. If you're doing the full stamp tour and stopping for coffee, it could easily be a half-day trip.

  • Bring Cash: While larger cafes may accept cards, many of the small snack stalls and souvenir shops are cash-only.
