Hong Kong has a museum for pretty much everything: local history, space exploration, imperial Chinese art, even a room full of record-breaking diamonds. A lot of the best ones are also clustered close together in West Kowloon and Tsim Sha Tsui, so you don't need to plan a whole trip around getting to just one.
This guide walks through the best museums in Hong Kong, what they cost, when they're closed, and how much time to set aside for each.

1. Hong Kong Museum of History

If you visit only one history museum in Hong Kong, make it the Hong Kong Museum of History. The "Hong Kong Story" permanent exhibition covers the city's history from prehistoric times through British colonial rule, the Japanese occupation, and the 1997 handover. It's free, it's large, and it uses life-size dioramas and recreated street scenes instead of just wall text.
The museum is located in Tsim Sha Tsui, close to the waterfront and easy to reach by MTR. Budget two to three hours since the exhibition space runs deeper than it looks from outside.
Best time to visit: Weekday mornings, right when it opens
How to get there: 10-minute walk from MTR East Tsim Sha Tsui Station Exit B2, or across the footbridge from Hung Hom Station Exit D1
Price: Free admission

2. M+ Museum

So, is there a MoMA in Hong Kong? Not exactly, but M+ Museum is the closest thing the city has. It opened in 2021 in the West Kowloon Cultural District as Asia's first major museum for 20th and 21st-century visual art, design, architecture, and moving image.
The Sigg Collection of Chinese contemporary art is the main draw inside, alongside rotating design and film exhibitions. Not everything requires a ticket: the Grand Stair, Found Space, and Roof Garden are free to enter, but the main galleries need paid admission. Plan for three to four hours to get through the collection!
Best time to visit: Friday evening, when it's open until 10pm and less crowded
How to get there: MTR Kowloon Station Exit C1/D1, then walk through the West Kowloon Cultural District
Price: HK$190 standard

3. Hong Kong Palace Museum

Next door to M+, the Hong Kong Palace Museum takes a completely different approach: it's built around Chinese imperial history, with hundreds of treasures on loan from Beijing's Palace Museum, some on public display for the first time.
The building has seven exhibition halls across seven floors, with a layout that references the Forbidden City's central axis. Right now, the museum is running "Ancient Egypt Unveiled," a special exhibition with 250 artefacts on loan from Egyptian museums, running through August 31, 2026.
There's also a jewellery exhibition featuring pieces tied to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, running through October 19, 2026.
Best time to visit: Weekday afternoons to skip the weekend queues
How to get there: MTR Kowloon Station Exit C1/D1, a short walk from M+
Price: From HK$70 general admission

Madame Tussauds Hong Kong sits inside The Peak Tower on Victoria Peak and holds over 100 wax figures across 12 themed zones, ranging from Hollywood stars to Cantopop legends and K-pop idols. It's one of only two permanent Madame Tussauds locations in Asia, alongside Shanghai.
Since it's built into The Peak Tower, you can also go on the Peak Tram ride and the Sky Terrace 428 viewing deck, so most visitors bundle all three into one trip up the mountain!
Best time to visit: Before noon on a weekday to avoid tour groups
How to get there: Take the Peak Tram from the Central terminus, or bus 15 from Central
Price: From HK$300 for adults

The Hong Kong Space Museum's egg-shaped dome is hard to miss on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. It opened in 1980 and houses the Stanley Ho Space Theatre, which was the first OMNIMAX projection system built in the eastern hemisphere. The dome screen is 23 metres across and shows a rotating lineup of astronomy documentaries and sky shows.
When planning to visit hong kong space museum, note that the exhibition halls (Hall of the Cosmos and Hall of Space Exploration) are booked separately from the Space Theatre shows, so factor in both if you want the full visit. It's a small museum, so an hour or two covers it.
Best time to visit: Wednesdays for free exhibition hall entry
How to get there: MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station Exit A1
Price: HK$10 exhibition halls, HK$15-30 Space Theatre shows

6. Hong Kong Heritage Museum

Out in Sha Tin, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum covers Hong Kong culture more broadly than the name suggests. The Jin Yong Gallery covers the career of Louis Cha, the city's best-known martial arts novelist, through more than 300 items including manuscripts and film adaptations of his books.
Next to it, "A Man Beyond the Ordinary: Bruce Lee" runs through July 2029 and covers his life through personal items, his yellow tracksuit, and multimedia installations.
Both of these exhibitions are free, along with the Cantonese Opera Heritage Hall and Children's Discovery Gallery, which makes this one of the best free museums in Hong Kong!
Best time to visit: Weekday mornings for a quieter walk through the galleries
How to get there: 6-minute walk from Che Kung Temple MTR Station Exit A
Price: Free admission

7. Coronet Diamond Museum

The Coronet Diamond Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui is a different kind of stop from the rest of this list. It displays ten Guinness World Record-certified diamond pieces, including a guitar valued at USD 2 million and a handbag set with 9,888 natural diamonds.
It's less about historical context and more about seeing record-breaking pieces up close, which makes it a quick 30-minute add-on if you're already around Canton Road!
Best time to visit: Any weekday, since guided tours run every 30 minutes
How to get there: 5-minute walk from MTR Tsim Sha Tsui Station Exit L6
Price: HK$ 80, guided tour included

FAQs about museums in Hong Kong

What museums to see in Hong Kong?

For a well-rounded trip, try to cover at least one history museum, one art museum, and one science-focused stop. The Hong Kong Museum of History, M+ Museum, and Hong Kong Space Museum give you a solid spread of local history, contemporary art, and hands-on learning.
If you have extra time, the Hong Kong Palace Museum and Heritage Museum round things out nicely.

Hong Kong has dozens of museums across government-run and private institutions, covering everything from art and history to maritime heritage, coastal defence, and even natural history. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department alone manages more than a dozen public museums across the city.
