Explore Ninh Binh's Best: Hoa Lu, Tam Coc, and Mua Cave

The tour guide arrived on time at the pick-up point. The itinerary included five activities: First, we visited a silk production facility where items are made from bamboo, but there was no pressure to buy anything. Second, we visited Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, which was a simple photo opportunity. Third, we went to a resort village for a buffet lunch. The food selection wasn't extensive, but the portions were sufficient. The only drawback was having to pay extra for drinks. At this point, there was also an option to rent bicycles and explore the area. Fourth, we experienced a thrilling antique boat ride on the river, which lasted about an hour. The scenery was incredibly beautiful, and we took many photos; this was the highlight of the entire trip. The boat operators actively solicited tips. Fifth, we hiked up a hill, which also took about an hour. The steps were quite steep, and most people found it challenging. The entire day's itinerary lasted approximately 12 hours. The tour guide was attentive throughout, providing information about each location, and safely returned all travelers to their hotel.

A Magical Day in Ninh Binh – Highly Recommended! This Ninh Binh day tour was a soul-stirring experience from start to finish. Booking through Klook was seamless, and the tour was perfectly organized. Our friendly guide shared rich insights into Vietnam’s history as we explored Hoa Lu, the ancient capital, with its quiet temples nestled among limestone peaks. But the highlight was the Trang An boat ride—an unforgettable journey through emerald waters, misty caves, and towering karst cliffs. As we glided past lush landscapes and into echoing grottoes, it felt like drifting through a dream. Lunch at a local countryside restaurant was delicious, offering a generous spread of authentic Vietnamese dishes. The tour concluded with the challenging yet rewarding climb up Hang Múa (Mua Cave). The 500 steps were no joke, but the panoramic view from the top—overlooking the Ngo Dong River and endless rice fields—was truly worth every step.

If you only have one day to get out of Hanoi, you have to do a day trip to Ninh Binh. It feels completely different from the city—massive limestone cliffs, temples tucked into the mountains, and rivers everywhere. Tips for the Tour: ​Bring a hat and sunscreen for the boat ride because there is zero shade on the water, and definitely save enough energy (and water!) for the Mua Cave climb at the end of the day. Your legs will hurt the next day, but the views are 100% worth it.

Wonderful trip. Tom a.k.a. Tom Cruise was very helpful with all information. He gave us a background about the place and was very clear with instructions on what to expect from locals, how to bargain, how much to pay / tip to avoid being ripped off. The limousine bus is very comfortable. The lunch includes a decent amount of vegetarian options. Overall, the trip is placed very well - starts with a visit to the temple, followed by lunch, then boating and finally a good hike.

Pros: * The ancient capital of Hoa Lu, Tam Coc, and the caves offered scenery that exceeded expectations. * The bus was spacious, making travel time comfortable. Cons: * We were taken to a sales shop, disguised as a rest stop, that sold bamboo crafts. We were subjected to sales pitches and held there for nearly an hour. If it weren't for this "rest stop," I believe we could have visited at least one more famous site in Ninh Binh. * Although snacks were sold, they were clearly priced higher than market value. * There was time for cycling, but the guide offered no advice on points of interest. We were simply told to keep turning right and return to the same spot, which was confusing. The roads and bicycles were in poor condition, making it hardly a cycling experience. * After the lunch break, the guide told us to wait to transfer from our current bus to a different van to go to Tam Coc. However, the van never arrived, and we ended up taking the same bus to Tam Coc. I believe the guide could have arranged this during the lunch break while chatting with other guides. * The boat operators at Tam Coc were persistent in selling items and soliciting tips. This even led to an argument between a boat operator and another participant on the same tour. If you have limited time and are deciding between Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, I recommend Ninh Binh. Ha Long Bay's waters are not very clean, and it's often crowded, making it difficult to enjoy a leisurely tour. For similar scenery, Thailand's Krabi offers cleaner waters and a more relaxed touring experience.

This activity is well worth exploring. It started promptly, and the drive was about two hours, with a stop halfway for restrooms and food. I recommend eating breakfast before departing. The first stop was Hoa Lu Ancient Capital, where we had about 50 minutes. Remember to bring a fan and an umbrella, as it can suddenly rain heavily in Vietnam! The second stop was for lunch, which was a buffet. The food was decent; don't expect too much, it's just a buffet to fill your stomach. After lunch, our guide took us cycling. If you prefer not to cycle, you can relax at the restaurant. After lunch, we went for a boat ride. There are two locations, Trang An and Tam Coc, and we were assigned to Tam Coc. The entire experience was enjoyable. Remember to bring an umbrella. During the ride, they will try to sell you handmade paintings, but we politely declined. After getting off the boat, the boatman will ask for a tip. The third stop was Mua Caves for hiking. Since the stairs were quite wet after the rain, and we were too tired, we decided not to climb for safety reasons. We sat at the restaurant below and took some photos. I must commend our guide, Ryan; his explanations were humorous, very clear (10/10), and helpful!

Rainy morning when we were picked up. I was asked to walk to meetup point bec buses are not allowed in Old Qtr. Exploring Hoa Lu (ancient capital) was not so fascinating, maybe the route needs enrichment or deeper historical details. Lunch is okay, somewhere in an eco-stay resort. The boat ride in Tam Coc is scenic, but it was too hot. We were all sweaty by 4 pm when we hiked on dragon mountain and the group only had an hour. Tom, our guide, is helpful. The general day trip is okay but the heat rly must be something to be prepared. Bring umbrella and sunscreen.

This was most definitely the highlight of our trip—surprisingly, even more memorable than our 2D1N cruise in Lan Ha Bay / Ha Long Bay! The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. We highly recommend choosing Tam Coc over Trang. Tam Coc offers the best of both worlds: the iconic towering limestone karsts and beautiful green rice fields. It’s incredibly scenic and peaceful. We did the Hoa Lu – Tam Coc – Mua Cave tour, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Our tour guide, Trang, was amazing—so passionate, knowledgeable, and full of energy. She gave us detailed insights into the rich history and culture of the places we visited. We boarded the limousine bus, which is totally worth it. This tour is a must-do if you’re visiting Ninh Binh!

This tour was fun, smooth, and not stressful at all. Everything was well-paced, from exploring the historical Hoa Lu Ancient Capital to the peaceful bamboo boat ride in Tam Coc, and finally hiking up the Mua Cave steps for a stunning view. I never felt rushed as we had ample time to do what’s in the itinerary. Flora, our tour guide, really did her best the entire day. She clearly knew what she was doing like always checking in on us, especially when we were in long queues or looked tired. She was friendly, organized, and professional. It felt like she was guiding a team, not just a group of strangers. You could tell she genuinely cared about making sure we had a good experience. Also, the buffet lunch was great. Highly recommended if you’re in Hanoi and want a nature + culture combo without the stress. Shoutout to Flora for her amazing energy and guidance!

It was a very valuable experience. The guide was always working hard and tried to meet the requests of the tour participants as much as possible. In Hoa Lu, he explained the history well. In Tam Coc, we had time to relax on the boat for about 90 minutes, but the sun was hot so we needed to protect our skin with a parasol or long sleeves. Don't forget to buy plenty of water before getting on the boat. Hang Mua was a wonderful view after climbing 500 steps. If possible, I recommend upgrading the bus. It will make your travel more comfortable.
